The distance...

The drag and drop operation in a large monitor will be a nightmare.
I hate drag and drop. I can't even use a mouse. But in Bitwig Studio you don't have to drag everything from side of the screen to another. You can load instruments and effects by double clicking them in the browse or from within the Devices area itself, for Bitwig devices and presets you have saved. If you want to be dragging in a lot of samples, my suggestion is to drag the left side of the browser right over so there is minimal distance to drag them. You can literally have it so you only have to drag a sample half an inch (12mm) to the Launcher. In fact using the mouse keys method I mentioned earlier I can load a sample with 3 key presses if it's on the same level as a clip slot: N selects a sample and locks a drag, holding H for a second moves it over to a clip slot, and N releases the drag and drops the sample.

Of course you can preview them in sync from inside the Browser anyway.

Ha ha! There's one on my site as well! I can't decide whether to call it B-day or Wiggy Wednesday.

I shouldn't have looked at that.

Thomas let me ask a strange question :D

Is BWS workflow nice without using keyboard shortcuts :?: Does it need to use much the right bottom of the mouse :?: Did you tried it with a touchscreen :?:

I am asking because i need to to replace my laptop that died recently and I am considering to get a windows tablets (in part because they are quite cheaper, even though it will mean no money for BWS) and I am trying to know how well it would work.

Thanks.

I'm not Thomas, and I am a big fan of keyboard shortcuts, but I think it would probably from that point of view as there are small icons on the screen for all the different panels, views etc. However I wouldn't even consider trying to use it on just touch screen.

But you can use a keyboard and mouse with a touch screen anyway, I have an Android tablet and I use a keyboard and trackpad with it.

Since I am Thomas (or at least was the last time I checked) ;-)

I actually don't use too much shortcuts myself and find the workflow very nice - you can, you don't have to.
The right mouse menu is needed every now and then, but not extremely often (nothing like Mulab/Mux ;-) ).
I have no touchscreen, but it's my impression that while you could of course do some stuff with touch, like draging around clips etc. I can't imagine it being too much fun to edit midi with touch or do any detail work...

To be honest, so far I think touchscreens for any serious work are a fad.

Since a Windows tablet (as long as it's not the crappy RT kind) is basically a laptop, I would guess it should work, but I would attach a keyboard and a mouse for BWS.
Many values in BWS can be entered with knobs or by dragging a slider etc. but some things are easier or faster to do with numerical input.

If unsure and not in too much of a hurry, maybe wait until the demo is available so you can get an impression yourself.

To me personally BWS on a (small) touchscreen would feel like repairing a mechanical wristwatch with mittens on ;-)

And: Would such a cheap tablet have enough power to run a full blown audio app?

Cheers,

Tom

It's really a give and take proposition.

I own Auria the iPad daw, which is obviously touchscreen, and the interesting thing is that some things actually work - much - better on a touchscreen, like selecting things, while some other things like automation editing (where you often need a much finer hit point than the tip of your finger) don't work nearly as well as with a mouse pointer.

So... it kinda depends on what you're doing at any given time.... but to your point... given that the mouse pointer works equally well on both large and really small things, it still wins. :)

I also suppose the relative downsides of touchscreens for audio work would magnify if you had chubby hands and fingers. :hihi:

Hello everyone,

I have read the thread but I could not find the answer to my question.
I'm sorry i f this has already been asked, and that would be very kind if someone can answer me :

- Does Bitwig Studio have some fade ins and fade outs between audio clip, maybe on the session view, to make sweet transitions between them, have them overlap slightly and do a volume crossover ?

Cheers,
B.

Yeah, that's basically my point. I'm sure there are some things that are fun with touch and some more experimental or "fluid" things that are actually better served with it (with multitouch especially), but it doesn't seem to cover all bases, you don't have force feedback or any "feel" or tactile orientation...
And since BWS isn't a touch-DAW (thankfully IMHO ;-) YMMV ) I personally think that trying to use it with touch screen ONLY would be pretty painful.

When I wrote "serious work", I explicitly referred to being able to do "everything" with it. A wacom tablet or a mouse wins this contest as you said.

As fun as leap motion, touch and all this stuff is, I wouldn't want to have to use it for most of what I do.

Cheers,

Tom

Not at the moment, and I think this will be one major Feature Request from basically everybody after the release ;-)
There is a fade in and fade out button for audio events, but those seem to be only to suppress clicks. You can't overlap audio at all in BWS.
The workaround right now is using two tracks, which isn't too painful since you can work in multiple tracks at once with layered editing. But the fades would have to be done with volume automation which isn't as convenient as having direct handles to drag.

Cheers,

Tom
