Why ? did you have some issue running it before it was included ? Or do you only run things that Reapers developers include with the installer, not entirely sure i get your point at all ?

Haha. Laziness I suppose... I was switching and updating every week with the jnif. Now I can worry less about it since it'll be synced up with the releases... at least so I think.... Beats fantasizing about vaporware!

Speaking of, does anyone know of what major plans are being made for Reaper 5? I purchased my license at discount at the end of the three development cycle so it doesn't include 5. I don't know why I'm asking, I'll almost certainly "renew" it for 5 and 6. Reaper is hands down the best bargain in music production.
I use it a lot for ninjam, it would be great if they'd update the built in ninjam client. I suppose I should just go over to the reaper forum and chat it up.

Nobody knows what will be in 5, at this point i doubt even the developers know what will be in 5, some of the things they 'accidentally' showed before 4 still haven't ever made it into a release, they are the most erratic developers in the game, and they rarely add any big features, things just creep into existence.

Ok, tnx. I can't be harsh on the Reaper developers. The product works well for me for what I use it for. It's the only DAW that I own that is a non-issue to use it from a usb stick on any computer that I need a DAW on, it's easy on the machine, and for some types of audio projects, it's my top choice. If that wasn't enough, it cost me about the same as a couple of pizzas and some beer.bungle wrote:Nobody knows what will be in 5, at this point i doubt even the developers know what will be in 5, some of the things they 'accidentally' showed before 4 still haven't ever made it into a release, they are the most erratic developers in the game, and they rarely add any big features, things just creep into existence.

Don't take my post the wrong way, everything i said is true, however they are the best developers in audio by a long long way, they have no idea about usability and i suspect that is now why most features creep in to existence, every time they try to do something big they fail miserably and have to spend a lot of time fixing their 'Cleverness'
There are still a hell of a lot of things that need 'fixing' in Reaper, in terms of usability.

ReaNINJAM is a prime example of this. Total cleverness technically and pretty much a UI disaster area. But you do have to hand it to them to have the best online jamming experience available (where the other "quasi quite close to but not being real-time" online systems just fail).bungle wrote:There are still a hell of a lot of things that need 'fixing' in Reaper, in terms of usability.

I use ReaNINJAM quite a bit. I'm curious why you think that it's such a "disaster?" I'm not challenging your assertion so much as I want to know specifically what you think is wrong with it.pljones wrote:ReaNINJAM is a prime example of this. My gripes with it are more about features than usability of the existing features. I wish that it sent some form of midi sync, had additional routing options, and allowed different defaults for new jammers, i.e., allowed me to default them silent.

I almost do that...

I'd be interested what major headline features people think Repear needs.
I'd boil my wishes down to:
A gui/workflow overhaul eg. maybe an 'idiots' way of routing stuff for quick and easy routing without having to stop and think too much about tracks and channels etc etc.
Some kind of improved sampling; Reaper has loads of potential for low level audio manipulation (ctrl+alt drag FTW) but could do with something better than dozens of instances of Sampleomatic5K, maybe a bit like the Live drum racks. Poise and Shortcircuit work well so something along those lines, integrated?

I would love an update of ReaPlugs that synchs up with the Reaper release though. There are times that I want to use some of my ReaScripts outside of Reaper but a few of the function calls aren't in ReaPlugs.

The UI has too much of the wrong stuff in it and too little of the right stuff.ghettosynth wrote:I use ReaNINJAM quite a bit. I'm curious why you think that it's such a "disaster?" I'm not challenging your assertion so much as I want to know specifically what you think is wrong with it.
Examples:
* The mixer is unnecessary and makes new users think it's how to adjust their xmit level and bad users think it justifies playing at any volume "because you can always adjust it your end".
* The Reaper-specific version should be more integrated, e.g. each incoming mono or stereo channel should get the correct "local" channel created in the UI, rather than leaving it to chance...
* It should be more integrated with the server, e.g. allowing BPI and BPM to be displayed (which it is) and selected, i.e. voted on if the server requires it, easily.
All of those make it unnecessarily hard for new users to have any idea what they're meant to do with it or how to get the effect they're after.
(Ideally, "BPI" would be "phrase length in beats" but I guess we're stuck with it now.)
(Even more ideally... you shouldn't be able to turn off the metronome and clipping would result in being kicked

The ReaPlugs are getting re-skinned to look more like hardware. Reaper 5 will also include vstis. Toontrack is coding a completely new drum sampler specifically for reaper. Also included will be a pad synth and an analog synth coded by stillwell/schwa.ghettosynth wrote:Speaking of, does anyone know of what major plans are being made for Reaper 5? Guitar amp software will be added. No one knows by whom but its rumored to be by LePou (hence the "quietness"from him).
All of this will come at a price.
So the non-commercial/commercial licensing will be gone and there will be only a $299 price tag and the download will be a few gigabytes.
Finally they're resorting to challenge/response protection.
Now the 30 day trial will expire permanently.
