Some info about the upcoming NUSofting "Drum Sampler",
official name and graphics not available yet,
the engine and the control interface is ready though,
thanks to the collaboration of NUSofting with an italian software engineer,
the same who made the core code of Mother Ship Astrobelt.
So currently we are working on the graphics and the drum kits
for the release.
Like the other NUSofting plugins, this is not a fancy synth overloaded with features,
but a fast and easy tool, with max audio quality available in VST.
The factory kits would be mostly oriented to the vintage beat boxes
and some glitchy kits, but it will be very easy to make your own
with any sample set.
NUSofting Drum Sampler features 24 drum pads,
four mute groups (also known as exclusion groups),
cross velocity layers and much more...
It loads wave files "on the fly", and requires no external editor.
No matter if you are working with high sample rates (88 or 96kHz): it will resample automatically the sound samples!
NUSofting Drum Sampler offers 3 stereo output bus, and each bus features an analog-sounding hard-knee compressor.
Unlike other VSTi drum machines, it offers a smart polyphony engine, so you can decide which sounds are important and which can be truncated when it runs "out of voices". Using the preferences panel you can set the polyphony up to 127 voices!
NUSofting Drum Sampler uses very little CPU time while providing the best sound quality, thanks to the (VST standard) external 32 bit sound bus and performing internally all the calculations at a resolution of 64 bit.
NUSofting Drum Sampler FEATURES:
Superior sound quality, thanks to the 64 bit internal mixer.
Three analog-sounding compressors on-board.
Three separate stereo outputs (6 mono using Pan).
Almost every parameter can be controlled via MIDI.
Pitch-bend support.
Note on/off support, off switchable per pad.
MIDI velocity re-mapper to match the Master Keyboard touch.
It can also be used to make the drum machine insensible to velocity.
Cross-velocity support, 4 layers per pad.
Gentle low pass filter sensible to MIDI velocity.
Automatically learns note as trigger.
32 voices of polyphony, with smart polyphony handling.
Panning 100% mono compatible.
Built-in audio meters.
Low CPU usage even with old processors.
Sample precise synchronization.
Can export and import drum banks in its own format or as FXB.
Can import LM-4 drum banks (with some limitations).
Supports 8, 16, 20 and 24 bit and 32 bit floating point wave files.

Sounds really cool - this will be it
.
But could you perhaps considering adding another output pair ?
If you have a standart akustic kit, additional outs for crashes and rides and toms and cowbells and ...(you get the picture)..are often necessary.

Yeah, I'd prefer to have more outputs, as well. I don't know what "panning 100% mono compatible" means, but I usually set drums up like this:
kick mono channel
snare mono channel
hats&cymbals stereo channel
toms stereo channel
percussion stereo channel
So I would find myself a little limited by just the three stereo channels. Of course, sometimes limitations inspire innovation, but I thought I'd bring it up...

I see your point guys, I'll see if it's posible to add more output before release,
anyway one idea is that some kits could be built per instrument, like "kick and snare", "cymbals", "toms"
and then you run one istance of the plug for each kit, so you got 3 stereo outs X "kick and snare",
3 stereo outs X "cymbals",
3 stereo outs X "toms",
you get for 9 stereo outs,
our Drum Sampler is so light on CPU that you wont notice running 3 of it, <grin>

That's not a bad idea, actually... Now if I could only get my roommate to get rid of his useless desk (the one he never ever uses) and set up his drumkit, I could sample it for the bonus NUSofting kit, "Paul's Crappy Old Drumkit With the Good Ayotte Snare."
edit to help liqih with his Engrish:
everybody who wants to contribute with the strangest or best percussion kits for the NUSofting "Drum Sampler", is welcome and moreover will get a bonus from our products!
that's make two kits and get one product (any!)
for free,

ha ha, good one it would be pough!
seriously it would be really welcome,
and one idea:
everybody who wants to contribute with the most ever strange or good percussion kits for the NUSofting "Drum Sampler", is welcome and moreover
will get a bonus for our products!
a 50% discount bonus for every usefull kit you made!
that's you made two kits and get one product (any!)
for free,
good?
note:
1) kits should be small and specific: E.G. only cymbals kits or only toms are welcome, only scratches or only congas as well
2) max 4 velocity layers per instrument
3) samples must be wavs (any rate or bits you wish)
packed as RAR archive and uploaded somewhere,
if you don't have a web space ask me for FTP
(pough is my english above correct? I would make that official)

hey
cool idea
but
would you consider adding a rex2 import, a sequencer... , i think everybody already has some sort of a drum sampler and there are some new coming (muon neutron, fxexpansion drum9)...
K
anyway, if it's going to be cool I'm buying it (dash addict here)

Please make the outputs configurable. I hate opening Orion and seeing 12 mixer channels when im only gonna use 4

So you need 24 sounds for each kit? Do you really need 4 velocity layers, especially if they are obscure sounds?liqih wrote: NUSofting Drum Sampler features 24 drum pads,

I've never really built a sampled drumkit before. How do you make sure that the volume levels change smoothly in multi-sample drum pads? Do I need to do anything to the waveforms? Or is it just a lot of trial and error setting the velocities?
I think I might go out and buy a SM57 today... unless anyone has a better idea for a mic to sample drums...

hey guys, the contest it's official now, check the new thread, <grin>
it should aswer to some of your questions,
(or ask me again)
for the others:
the outputs configurable: not possible AFAIK
from the plugin,
I think I'll go with two versions one with 3 stereo outs (6 channels) and one stereo only (2 channels)
stressing to use more instances if you need more outputs, <grin>, hey it's a small synth, LOL
adding a rex2 import, a sequencer:
not in first release, let's see whether the "simplicity" wins or not,
