I don't understand why they stick with that look when it gets so many comments like this. It looks horrible.

I just looked on the SB site shop; update from WL6.0 to 8.0 is listed as £162.00GBP (193 euro). Maybe I don't understand your full situation; have you already had an official quote from some retailer/individual for 450 euro to update..?

Without knowing all the facts, I would strongly suggest this is just plain wrong.
My statement was about Cubase, not WL, because the statement I referred to was about Cubase as well. I admit, it's confusing in a thread about Wavelab.

The "big 3" (AVID, Steinberg, Apple) have serious problems currently - that is more than apparent.
What exactly are Apple's serious problems?

Apple Logic X - random bugs, slowdowns of the GUI, dropped 32bit support. Just read some comments on both KVR and GS - that host isn't save of issues either.

Are we still on Wavelab however?

I have read the threads (unlike you I actually use Logic/Apple stuff). LX works fine for me.

"Are we still on Wavelab?" I dunno, what does that question mean? I was just interested in the evidence for your claim in the OP re. Apple, that's all.

Post

Oh I do use L9 and LX from time to time at clients rigs. And I hear just as much negative vibe towards Apple as there is towards AVID and Steinberg currently. It's just not as "vocal" in here yet again.

My comment was mainly to state that there is something wrong going on with the big 3 on the market. Nothing more, nothing less.

I also stated that the, after the confirmation by PG (the lead programmer), implementation of the Fraunhofer/SONNOX ProCodec into Wavelab (which is a 50EUR paid-update) might be actually worth it. Considering that you pay way over 500 EUR for the EBU R-128 analysis tools alone (see Grimm Audio or Nugen Audio), and 430EUR incl VAT for the standalone SONNOX/Fraunhofer ProCodec. Not to mention the new implemented "multi-format batch export" function - which will save a lot of time.

My main concern is still with the VST3 issues. Too many developers lately where rendering with VST3 versions is impossible due to crashes, no processed audio stream (the infamous "Audio Forward Bug") and what not. Even if the developers sticked to the VST3 SDK specs and the check tool with the SDK did not drop any issues. Cubendo and S1 work fine however - this should be a definite warning sign.

So far, the developer didn't confirm a fix - which is a known issue since Wavelab 7 (I know from the companies I beta test for, that they're in touch with Steinberg about this for quite a while), and pretty much flaming up over and over now since the VST3 SDK is the only available SDK.

Everything else is just added bonus to me (though I am having an eye on the rumored "automation" features in WL9 - which could turn WL into a more deluxe "tape machine"). And the upgrade fees in general are still more fair than with Cubendo.

My 2c.

Still not happy with Steinberg going the interim-payment route with WL as well however. There just doesn't seem to be any reason to release a v.1 or v.2 anymore - only one paid update/major version per year.

Major bug fixes should be free of charge, but I more than happily pay the 50 euros, once a year or so for extra features.

I rather have the choice to pay for an upgrade than the alternative, subscription service. A subscription model for Cubase / wavelab / vst instruments, would definitely steer me to other products that do not have that.
AMD Ryzen 3900X & RX 5700XT, 128GB RAM, Windows 11 Pro 64-bit
Waldorf Blofeld & Pulse 2, Akai MAX49 & MPD226, Steinberg UR44 & CMC controllers
Cubase Pro 14, Nuendo 14, Wavelab Pro 12, Dorico Pro 5, Rapid Composer v5, FL Studio 2024

And that is the main point of critism:

If there is a .5 announced, there is currently usually only one(!) free-of-charge fix for the host. If there is a major flaw still existing post that update - you have to pay extra in order to maybe get that fixed. If it's not fixed, you have to pay again to hope to see a fix in the next major version.

That is definitely not a cool move.
