For the GUI only, which is snappy and responsive. The sound engine is not written in Java, for obvious reasons.

There is really nothing wrong with Java, I use some quite sophisticated programs that are made in it. DAWs are not really that sophisticated which is why there are at least a dozen out there made my relatively small teams of people.
