I'm not normally on windows, but I know varietyofsound makes some HQ free plugins you could test out.

Definitely worth checking into!

Zebra sounds "very" cold, digital and sterile?
... pardon, what?

Have you tried to build your own waves? (mandatory if you want different tone!)
..after that, use the XMF instead of the VCF

how about the new Dist module, did you play around with that?

Whoever wants music instead of noise, joy instead of pleasure, soul instead of gold, creative work instead of business, passion instead of foolery, finds no home in this trivial world of ours.

Yes, some parts of Zebra should be avoided or tricked up (little make-up to hide age I guess :D ) But really, sometimes, you can get Zebra sounding pretty much like Diva if needed to some extent.

Get some noise modulating pitch.
Get a slow moving random LFO also modulating pitch (a bit less).
Don't use the FX as FX, use them as synthesis modules. If you need a really prominent studio effect for your sound, a standalone plugin will work better. I was never a huge fan of Zebra's chorus, in comparison to, say, Diva's. In fact, I prefer the sideband modules for chorus duties.

Also, change up the saw waveform. Something with a bit of a curve to it will sound slightly warmer. It's easy enough to alter the curvature of the wave with the Osc FX (Fundamental, and a few others).

The interesting thing about Zebra is that, as a semi-modular, you're pretty much building your own synth from scratch out of parts. From that angle, the slightly sterile INIT patch is a good thing, because you get to decide in what ways the sound will have character.

I always try out your (and many others) sound programming suggestions. For the life of me I cannot find anywhere in Zebra to use noise as a mod source.

Maybe switch your computer on a few minutes before you actually want to use Zebra...

I think Sendy means using a "noise" modulation source like the rand glide LFO shape. You could also modulate the speed and depth of an LFO modulating the pitch with a global LFO or an MSEG. Something to make the pitch vary a little unpredictably over time.

Post

Yeah, if you use a random LFO and set the speed up high, you get, with small modulation amounts (which is plenty in this case), the equivalent of modulating with noise, somewhere between pink and white. You can also crossmodulate the LFO speed with another LFO to vary it's rate of... variance. Though that's a tip I've heard but don't really use too often myself.

It'd be nice if someone put together an FAQ on the warm / analog side of Zebra with pointers to specific patches and tips on settings. It's not that it can't do those sounds, but it has such a huge tonal palette that it's easy to overshoot them. Like, if you do something additive or with a comb, it's not going to sound analog because analog just doesn't produce those timbres.

Some of the geomorph wavetable tricks are great for warming things up tho - like your Zebroscillators, Sendy. I can get great Boards of Canada pads by animating the wave position. Schwaaaaaawwwww.
