A drum machine within a drum machine (drumception?)

When in live, I like to load drum machines that produce midi data (like stylus or groove agent) into a drum rack cell and then use the "receive all notes" function so that each pad in the drum rack sends a midi note to the drum vst. In other words the drum vst is loaded in one drum rack cell but receives all the midi notes from all cells.

Here it is in abletons words:

Is there a way to do this in Bitwig? I didn't see in the manual under drum machines. :help:

Also I know you cant send midi data between midi tracks yet, but can you record midi produced by vsts like Stylus RMX or Groove Agent?

No... not within Bitwig.

Woah.. I've never even though of loading sequencers into drum racks. Why.. what..? What does it have over an Instrument Layer/Instrument Rack if you just want all incoming notes to go to all subdevices? Genuinely curious.

A. It allows me to use a the step sequencer in push with any drum VST. IE play with the output of a virtual drummer style drum machine with the push step sequencer.

B. You can have several overlapping drum machines that excel at different things in one interface.
So for example, I may be using Groove Agent 3 (the virtual drummer) to get inspired for certain style of drum kit, or more likely to find a drum fill that fits the style of drum kit I'm using.
But I can also have battery 4 loaded in the same drum rack (as the main drum machine) because it has better sounding drum kits.
Then i can load miscellaneous one-shots and drums directly in the drum rack and Now I have the virtual drummer element of Groove agent, the sound quality of battery, the step sequencing of push and all the normal drum rack functionality.

Push may not be supported yet but maybe eventually, and in the mean time there are ppl out there with livid base and launch pads that could hypothetically do this in Bitwig.

I also know this is useless without the ability to record the midi output of VSTs but I like being to able to combine the strengths of various drum machines into one super drum machine the same way you stack various synth VSTs with instrument racks.

I hope that explanation isn't too convoluted.

I do this in Live with Nerve, and no it is not possible at the moment.

I think it can be done now:

Steps to Map VST to Bitwig Drum Machine
Load VST: Place the VST drum machine (e.g., Battery, Microtonic) onto a single pad within a Bitwig Drum Machine device.
Route MIDI (One Pad):
To keep all drums on one pad, just use that pad to send MIDI.
To distribute drums across pads, click the "Show All Instruments" arrow in the Drum Machine device.
On each pad (e.g., kick, snare), insert a Note Filter to allow only the desired MIDI note for that drum sound to pass to the VST.
Route Audio (Multi-Out):
Open the VST plugin window and enable multi-output (e.g., set Kick to Output 1, Snare to Output 2).
In the Drum Machine, click the chain selector (right side) to open the nested chain editor.
Use the Audio Receiver device on subsequent pads, selecting the corresponding VST output (PRE) to separate the sounds.
Save as Preset: Click the 'Save' icon in the Drum Machine device panel to save your mapping for future use.

Alternative Methods
Note Pitch Shifter: Place this device before the VST on specific chains to transpose MIDI inputs to match the VST's internal MIDI mapping.
Drum Machine "Expand": Use the expanded mixer panel in the Drum Machine to adjust volumes and effects per pad once the audio is mapped.
For complex kits, using a Note Grid device for custom MIDI remapping can be more flexible than filters.
