O.K, This gets my award for best Aprils Fool "New" Product.
It's searingly funny because it's probably not too far off in the future.

This gets points for being believable.

But this gets points for ludicrosity! (yeah, I made up a word, it's ok, I can do that)

Not sure what you mean dude? By believable I mean that it's a reasonable process for creating one-off picks that are exactly like some other pick. It's fairly easy to imagine that you might be able to buy different materials for blanks or even create your own, and, the technology to capture "famous picks" is little more than a description of their material and dimensions.

By contrast, the sweetwater product is funny and is mocking the idea of "modeling", but lacks believability because it's just not realistic that one could so radically change the properties of a physical material via software, at least not today.

The Line6 joke could be prescient, in fact, because when the 3d printer industry matures, you might actually see a product just like this. It wouldn't surprise me if it came from Line-6 either. It strikes me that the joke was created by people who are used to the kind of thought exercises that one does when you're trying to innovate.

And the marketing-speak is over-the-top versions of the actual techniques they and similar companies use. It's well-done for a farce.

I'm sure someone will actually make this...

Looks like it's Apple only.....

Unfortunately, very few materials used in 3d fabrication match those used for picks, so its not, really. The style of printer they show (its a photoshopped Makerbot2, I believe) generally prints in PLA or ABS, which are not particularly suitable for a pick; PLA is a bit soft, ABS a bit brittle (at the thicknesses needed). And material/thickness are probably vastly more important to a pick than shape.
Even the more upscale 'professional' extrusion-based 3D printers work with similar materials, and the point-fusion 3D printers will be a different category again; resins and some metals etc.
An idiot on Set Theory:
"In some cases there is an object called red that contains everything that is red. In much the same way a pot is a plate."

Ah yes. That impacts the joke. It's no longer funny. We can go home.

Dude, it's about the concept, not about a product, it's a joke. I'm just saying that it's a better joke than the modeled pick because it has MORE believability than a modeled piece of plastic. It's the difference between Arthor C. Clark and Tolkien. Picks are some kind of plastic, 3d printers work with plastic, picks are defined by physical properties. I could describe this product at an average band meeting and the average person would believe it, describe the modeled pick and they know that it's a joke.

All of my picks are nylon, FYI.

Yeah, and I described why its currently only a joke. You know, given that you described it as 'reasonable' without adequately describing where it became unreasonable. At the moment, I deal with people with a manifest misunderstanding of what 3D fabrication is capable of on a weekly basis, forgive the f**k out of me for taking that 'reasonable' and clarifying it a bit, Im sure you'd never do anything like that.

Talk to me in ten years.
yes, because the fact that I know some about the current state of 3D printing clearly means Im inured to the prospect of further materials being usable eventually. That makes sense.

didn't you read the full article? on the page it gives a link, (i need to learn more) then when you click on the link, it says, "this was just a joke. but you knew that."

:edit: ah ok, the i need to learn more link is gone now.
