Welcome CS, I know how you feel. I was a visitor here (on and off) for three years before I ever made a post (and look at me now, only 8000 or so behind Vurt).

Anyway, I agree that we need more reviews, especially since the forum servers only search the last few months of posts. At least the reviews stick around for awhile.

I think it is best to simply state your prejudices upfront in the review, then let the words fly. If you want to review Amplitube, but hate guitars, just let that be known and proceed to tell everyone what it can do to drumloops or accordians. I'm sure someone would find the review usefull.

In these days of functional demos it is easier for one to be objective, as well. If I were to review my digital camera, for instance, I could make statements about how well it works for me, but I have no way to compare it to competing models. OTOH, when we review software, we can easily make comarisons to competing products because we can actually try the demos. Makes us all that much closer to working for CM...
And all life's fears
Can invade my ears
I can handle it

so your not sure on vanguard then? :?
No, I was excited when I first got it, but it sounds soooo digital and the presets all sound really similar, obviously in context, the arps don't sound like basses etc.

I realised the other day that I've never used it in a track, I don't make trance so maybe that's it.

No doubt someone will step up and tell me how wrong I am, but...

Same here, i gave mine to quincy.

 if the baby's not here by Sunday then I'm not going....it's a shame, but i've seen them lots before and I've bigger fish to fry/nappies to change etc., I'll live. :)

Regarding Vanguard, apart from the gate (which I don't need for my tunes), there's nothing there I can't get elsewhere.

I'm sure it's perfect for a lot of people but just doesn't excite me.

Am I using it right? I don't know, I just pick presets and whack the crap out of me keyboard like I do with all me VSTs, then go skin up....

Good work CS.

I, like you, have been coming here for fecking ages but have only recently decided to actively participate (in what? I don't know...you rationalize on your feet).
So, um, yeah...I didn't bother to introduce myself...doh! Hello everyone, I'm Mr Lizard, the name is a reference from Chris Morris' Jam. I seem to have the strange ability to kill threads whenever I post...which is nice.
And yes, I think posting reviews is a jolly good idea...however, I only really tend to use freeware, shareware or very cheap effects plugins(I use hardware synths and am constantly broke). So is my posting reviews actually going to help people as they can just go and try them out themselves?

Post

I hate to bring excuses rather than solutions but I am a novice at synths and all that correlates to them. I would never want to give a review that wasn't up to par because of my own lack of knowledge.

Know what I mean? :)

I think so, because it's nice to hear what someone has to say about any synth. It could help people make a decision about which free synth is for them, and save them a load of time downloading and trying everything for themselves. I mean, what if you unknowingly downloaded a synth that only makes kitten noises, with a half carrot half reindeer gui?!

I know what you mean, but still, it's about how an AVERAGE USER enjoys the product. Wouldn't it make you feel better to read a review from someone with your level of technical saavy? If you only understand so much, does it help you to hear something like: The modulation parameters of the disotonic destabilizer had a wonderful effect on the tone, but the triple multisync LFOs seemed to clip the leading edge of the "superlaser 3000 waveform developer/random truck noise generator".

Or would you rather hear: This synth rips, I love it for lead lines, and it does bass well too. It sounds just like a Virus :D (kicking up dirt, I know).

Just some thoughts :P

I shouldn't have let this slip, I'm pretty sure this is top secret, and under joint development between Access and Native Instruments. Not to divulge too much info, but Access will handle a hardware version (Real reindeer/carrots may or may not be used), While NI handles the soft version. Hush hush.
