Should selected preset name be displayed in Melda plugins?

Poll ended at Sat Jul 19, 2014 4:51 pm

Yes, it helps me work with my own presets and remember what's used.

No, I don't need to know. Saving GUI space is more important to me.

Yes, but you already did it one thread and now it is getting a little out of hand :D.

Anyway, truncating preset names will of course be needed, but it doesn't solve it at all. I thought for example about replacing the "Presets" in the button by the current preset. But that's a really short name! In some plugins it could be ok, in other not at all. And more over the rest of the GUI would be moving with the text... etc... You see, it's not easy at all...

On the other hand, looking at all my other VST (EFFECTS!), most of them don't display the preset name, either. And they don't even have such an advanced preset browser like Melda plugins! :)

But if it's that complicated, what about an easy solution like a simple tool tip (for example when hovering over the "preset" sign) or a small "P" button to click at where a small window with the full preset name appears and disappears with another click?

No need for complex text truncation algorithms and scalable preset display fields - we don't want to see you working on updates 24/7 for free, you should still have some time to enjoy with your girl friend, especially now when the summer is there! 8)

A No Brainer really but i think Voj has been dodging this for years ;)

I felt innocent with starting poll, didn't know that it is high treason :D

But that sounds like a very good idea. Maybe you make the "preset" button just a little bit wider, and align those other buttons a bit more dense. In most views there is still space between the plugins name and the preset button, and for those where is not, those are very narrow windows, should be ok if they get a tiny bit wider?

I don't understand this? When the preset name field is fixed size, nothing will move?

Anyway, the collapsible bar also sounds very good to me, indeed perfect because people who don't want it can collapse it and dont loose space, and people like me can expand it :)

Its a cool feature that works great with the band display, the modulator display etc.

Hehe, guys, I'd say the conclusion is the collapsible panel ;).

CableChannel: For the record, it's not possible to make something more "dense". As you know these are not simple plugins, where the dev simply draws something in photoshop and uses it as background texture, which is the way almost every other plugin is done. It's defined by the style and there are restrictions. Size of every content of everything is detected and the rest of it is adapting to make everything fit. It's actually very very complicated, more than it looks at first sight... (In fact I got my masters degree for a simplified version of this engine :D).

I was just reminded of this thread the other day when I was using the arrows to flip through some presets and wishing I could see the name of the preset as I went through them.

My suggestion would be to replace "Presets" on the Presets button with the name of the active preset, even if it's too small to show the entire name of the preset. I'm a fan of this behavior in Native Instruments products as well as u-he, among others.

Yes, exactly that has been implemented ;). Wait for the update ;).

But no indicator, sorry. There are too many settings here, some are burried deep down there... These are not a few knobs simple things, like that plugin on the screenshot ;).
