You are so right.
I just use algorithmic composer apps with Steve Slate drums now and call it a day. "I'm a composer"

Nothing wrong with generative methods/tools and ready to use samples/loops.
Architect doesn't need to grow trees for wood and produce all bricks and mortar.
He is a creator of structures, not materials/elements. In fact, he creates a blueprint for
structure, and this structure is actually built by others.
He should know physical properties of wood and bricks, but he doesn't need to produce them
or to know details of production.

1. Always have a field recorder running, recording everything. You never know when an interesting sound will occur.

pretty much - I think that is the point of the joke. I have hardly ever used loops, but if I want to play along to a 'click track' (also almost never) I would rather play along to music (or loops) than a metronome. I don't think I've kept a loop or drum machine track in a piece for a very long time, but I might if it was part of the concept.

and I write my own software to generate music based on other people's music. I don't think of that as cheating, but I also do it in a very lightweight way as I don't want to write music software, I want to make music.

I thought using loops was cheating... so I cheated.

There's a huge difference between an instrumentalist when compared to a composer/producer. As a composer the imperative is not about how well you play but how well you fantasise/create. One doesn't even need to know anything about musical theory if one has an innate predilection towards it. In fact theory can sometimes be more of a hindrance than an aid. When all is said and done... in the end it's not about samples/loops or wether a thing is hand made or even sounds but about the emotion a piece of music stirs in us.

Here's an interesting article on Irving Berlin who wrote songs like White Christmas and God Bless America. http://www.straightdope.com/columns/rea ... he-compose He couldn't read or write music but composed some of the greatest songs ever written.

Kraftwerk's desolate charming music or Stravinsky's firebird suite create different emotions in us, as does Gesaffelstein's heavy technoid beats or Led Zeppelins blues rock... Do most people care how it was created. Probably not! And isn't an orchestra a kind of human sampler to a composer?

There seem to be quite a few purist luddites hanging around here who remind me of the critics that damned Debussy's first concerts for not being what they felt music should be.
Music's spectrum is so wide that there's something for everyone without getting into moot arguments about idealistic subjective points of view.
