Step recording sequencer for Diva! (As Microbrute)

HI.
I know all the attempts for a good sequencer that Urs and his team have done, but I want to suggest a further hurdle.
I would like to have a sequencer in Diva, with step recording option. (As on Microbrute, or Sub37 Or new MiNibrute SE)
It is more difficult to say than to do.
With a Keyboard and a rest button, i record a sequence. It starts to record after the first press (of a key or rest button), and it stops recording on the last key or rest (pushing a "stop/start recording" button).
After that, my keyboard becomes a transposer for the sequence that I've just recorded.

I always wonder why soft synths have sequencers at all
on a hardware synth it makes sense, as need it when not using with a DAW/computer.
but with a soft synth why not just use an extra DAW/VST... let the synth concentrate on being a synth
what you asking can be done really well in something like Numerology (and to a lesser extent Ableton, and loopers)

You do not know what you're missing!
And there is nothing in Ableton Suite that can do what I've written. (M4L sequencer can transpose but can't record a live sequence)
Instant recording and transposing sequences is a totally different thing from DAW seq. writing.

Can't Thesys do that?Jhowas wrote:HI.

thats where i have done it before... if your into this kind of thing, numerology is a gem.
in ableton its problematic because it doesnt support mutli midi channels in m4l... though you could do it wi m4l, if you 'split' the playing area eg all notes below c0-b2 transpose, c4-c8 playing.
you could also use osc to get around the ableton limitation.
of course if you have max, you can do it in that very easily too.
i guess i prefer having a bunch of tools, rather than one swiss army knife.

The problem I have with step-sequencer style transposition via keys is that you get clashing notes on certain keys. I end up having to write the whole thing out and then inflect the notes differently over certain chords, to avoid note clash. I even end up doing this to acid lines, I have to make several copies of the pattern with different notes flatted, because of some fancypants chord change
That said, the sequencers and arps on softsynths can be used as part of sound design. For example, a simple way to get a two-note octave "trill" is to just stick C-1, C-2, loop in the sequencer, and you get instant chip burbles.

Yeah , most of the fun to be had with step sequencers is using them to modulate everything BUT pitch .
That said , it would be great to see a step sequencer with root key & lock options , to avoid clashing notes .

What you can have are multiple patterns that can be switched via midi so you can change patterns on the fly as your chords changeSendy wrote:The problem I have with step-sequencer style transposition via keys is that you get clashing notes on certain keys. one can abuse the .tun file support for scale locking... I've even always wanted to build that in as presets...

In Live there's a cool way to map a 'Pitch' plug over a range of keyboard keys. When MIDI mapping, hold the low note and then press the high note of the range, and adjust the min/max appropriately (like, if low C1 and high C2, min:0, max:+12). In combination with automation for recording to session slots, this is a way to get record & transpose - not saying it's quite as nice as the hardware workflow, but maybe worth mentioning.Jhowas wrote:You do not know what you're missing!

Live's scale plug-in is very nice for mapping transposed notes onto scales as well. I like putting a chord plug in front of it (the transpose parameters on that can be mapped to a range of keys as well, I guess ... I'd probably use rack knobs).
