You can look at other sequencers and recorders all you like, but I think you'll come back to tracktion. I have recorded in studios and with a tape and digital 4 and 8 track for ever. Now all I use is tracktion (and reason). The rewire support and freeze function can not be had ANYWHERE else for this price. And speaking of price, this feature alone makes tracktion WITHOUT COMPARISON!! Price considerations aside, I'm a computer guy who's always recorded on hardware and I feel that this is simply the best, easiest to use software that's out there.
If you want horror stories, look no further than www.cubase.net
Tracktion is the best. Hands down.

I personally just use tracktion for it's sequencing capabilities, that in itself is amazing. I have realized it's differences with the other program that I will be using for simple audio recording and mixing down, Adobe audition (ex cool edit pro) and I think for me it is the best combination!

one thing it's worth bearing in mind with all the 'whining'. A fair number (a good majority probably) of users here have other hosts than Tracktion too. If Tracktion were an outright horror story, why would we be here fretting about it? We'd have just wondered off and used our other toys, no?
Tracktion users tend to froth a little, both for and against the software. A number of us have spent many many ours helping the community and trying to take the load off of Jules. Neither of these things is the sign of a bitter disenfranchised user base, rather it looks to me like a bunch of lost cause fanboys. That's fine though 'cos we're all in good company.

No complaints dude. I like it here. In fact I've creased myself laughing on at least one occasion, maybe more but that might have been a different KvR forum.valley wrote:one thing it's worth bearing in mind with all the 'whining'. Multiple hosts? Not for me I'm afraid. Not until this degree I just got gets me a decent job anyway. Buying a host sequencer is a one shot for me. If I go with Tracktion I can afford some plugs. If I go with sonar I get a load of plugs with it but can't afford an ImpOscar anymore! (for example - ALL options are open (except maybe shoe-face, which makes me feel sick))
Keep talking chaps, if you have the time. My boat is a starting to float!

I myself am at the point of buying my first and only sequencer
That will be Tracktion
Only using two synts ( Atmosphere and Hypersonic ) and was waiting on the bug fix for Hyper.
Tried some others that are out there and even bought some books to find my way in them, but got lost nevertheless
Since I downloaded the trial version of Tracktion I instantly knew that this was the one for me. Looking forward to get rid of the 'schwoesch' sound next week

Tracktion rocks.
I think it's worth considering that many of us here have been here a long time and been using Tracktion for quite some time. For a long time we got used to updates and bugfixes every few days. Obviously as Tracktion began to fulfill it's potential, updates were not require as frequently. Some folk here took that the wrong way and thought Jules was ignoring his users or had become part of the 'corporate wheel' by doing a deal with Mackie.
This was completely wrong and I am sure anyone who has had any dealings with Jules will back me up on this one; Jules is one of a new breed of developers, along with people like Jon from CFX and Jorgen aase (energy XT), who are working alone to create a product that suits the needs of the users and are very responsive to ideas.
This forum is here for people to air their views about what they want in Tracktion, request help, ask questions etc. Sometimes it can get a bit negative but that's to be expected; people are always more vocal in complaint than in congratulation. If you polled the users, I am definate there would be a huge proportion of happy users (me included).
Also, Tracktion is no longer the 'new kid on the block', its userbase is much larger now and that means more people with more ideas of how it should work. Jules will not be able to keep everyone 100% happy (I'm sure he would if he could!) because how you work is personal to you. Some of the people here need to be reminded occasionally, that they are not the only people using Tracktion!
As an example, some people have complained about the lack of sync facilities to video and have been saying it shoould be the no. 1 priority. I don't use video, so I couldn't care less and would prefer the sequencing side to be updated (come on V2!). We are both asking for things that we want, the difference is I understand that my needs are just that 'my needs'.
At the end of the day Tracktion in conjuction with Energy XT gives me a near perfect working environment. I am very happy.
I'm still wishing for some things and there's the odd 'small' bug to iron out but having had experience of the 'big' sequencers, I know this is a much better program for what I want to do and I know that I am being listened to when I contact the developer.
Can you really ask for more?

I haven't had a single terrible experience with Tracktion for ages. I have some minor grouses, but no showstoppers - in fact, I tried to switch back to a competing product *coughoplatcough* and found myself cursing because I couldn't do things like I could in Tracktion. And, since I do both pure electronic music (all VSTi) and rock/thrash (my guitar, my bass, and my SM58) Tracktion makes it easy to shift from one mode of operation to the other.
Tracktion, with a few freebie plugs - Stepchild, Arparatus, ChordWorx, RackBitz - is an amazing environment for all kinds of music production! And I've wasted tons of cash on other things (Sonar 1, Logic Silver when it was on the PC, Cubasis) and I've never been as productive as I am in Tracktion. I think I just need a slightly more powerful step sequencer than Stepchild for drum work and I'll be in heaven!

As hinted at earlier, many of us have been around this forum from the start... so saying it's great, again and again, might seem a bit indulgent and particularly nonconstructive in honestly making Tracktion an even better sequencer.
However, that being said...
Tracktion is f**king great!
and if you don't like it, you suck!
Opps, did that come off a bit bias?
<fanboy mode>
Tracktion got me off to completing my first set of tracks in months! Tracktion inspired me enough to start coding plugins! Tracktion has made the task of making music dead simple! Tracktion has done nothing but help me express my thoughts musically!
</fanboy mode>
Bugs or not, Tracktion has made me highly productive in a musical sense... what else can I ask for? it rocks!
BTW Jules, when is v2 coming out? are are you gonna have all those bugs fixed?

One other thing. There was a time...sigh...when it was just the forum and Jules and Tracktion was getting developed very quickly through that interface. Several releases weekly, lots of interaction, bugs and furballs flying, very fun. And a few knowledgeable types like Valley and ModuLR have really been involved. But Jules can't live on KvR alone or us "nutters" so Mackie got involved and things changed as Jules is preparing for v2 and the big time and can't really develop in the same way as before because too many people are watching now. So there's been a bit of a shift and that may be the source of the sense that motivated your first post: the original group of users used to be much more central to the development of Tracktion than it is now. But, as the last few pages have demonstrated, people grouse about Tracktion more from the context of family than anything else. I demoed Tracktion last December 03 and knew I had to have it, that this program was not just functional but a kind of art form in progress. And it's proven to be true. And it's attracted a great bunch of people I'd really like to go out and have a beer with sometime. Probably have to be a cyber-beer but you get the idea.

...especially when one has more experience dealing with some developers, it'll be clear that Jules does interact with his users remarkably. I, too, miss the good-o-days when there were several releases in a week, but I'm also aware that's not practical to expect it still will be case when Tracktion grows into maturity. The shift of bussiness model is inevitable.valley wrote:one thing it's worth bearing in mind with all the 'whining'. Maybe an opinion from a non-Tracktion user will be welcome. My favorite sequencer is Sonar, but I see no reason to run down other products because I don't use them.
I frequently hear other Reason fans discuss sequencers. Tracktion is a perpetual favorite, and on the strength of the many endorsements it's received over the years, and my reading on it, I recommend it frequently. I'm not the only person who, though preferring to use some other program, nevertheless suggests Tracktion when the question arises.
As with any software, the question shouldn't be "Is it the biggest seller in the market?" or "Has it more bells and whistles than everyone else?" It should, of course, be "Will this product meet my present and near-future needs?" For a great many people, Tracktion answers these questions with resounding yeses. It wasn't my choice, but I respect and admire it.
Hey, the more quality products there are to choose from, the better the fit each customer can get! Competition is good. Variety is the spice of life. Courses for horses. Different strokes for different folks. Gotta catch 'em all. (Huh? :->)

Just to add to the good vibes
...
I LOVE Tracktion, and thats coming from being a long-time cubase and logic user. It took me about an hour to fully suss the 'Tracktion way' and I was away. Granted there are some issues but nothing fatal, and Tracktion has NEVER crashed on me, or caused me to lose work. That alone is worth the paltry cost of the software.
Some things I love about it..
- the Reason rewire implementation is perfect. PERFECT. To be fair, Cubase SX2 is also perfect now, but thats only just recently happened.
- Stable. Never crashed. Not once, in months of hard use.
- Easy to use, but the depth is there if you need it.
- VST automation. Again, perfect, easy and faultless. Unlike Cubase which occasionally (for a larf) reassigns automation randomly.
- Track freezing. Works many times faster than the competition (cubase took 13 mins to freeze an instrument over <100 bars, tracktion took 3 mins)
- Simple screen interface, easy to navigate and never gets cluttered.
- Sounds good, very CPU efficient.
What don't I like? Not much really, and most of the stuff below is known to be included in V2
- The grid editor sucks. SUCKS! But it is usable, just tooooo fiddly. Linking the snap grid to the zoom level is madness
- Bundled VST fx are wank. still for $80 what do you expect? Go and buy QuantumFX and be happy.
- No support for DXi plugs. Shame...
- No PDC in rack filters, which kinda negates their usefulness. This really needs to be sorted
So go and buy it, you won't be sorry. The more familiar with other DAWs you are, the happier you'll be with Tracktion

Actually, right now the whole flex area is something of a work in progress. I set the space up ready for the flex crew to do their stuff, but I need to find some time to work with them, and maybe get some actual pages up.
Eventually it'll all be a lot easier to find straight from the main adbe.org site. I'll post here and at TF just as soon as there is something to say.
I think I'm allowed to say that there will be some new content on TracktionFaction from the flex boys soon, too. Keep an eye open for that too.
(From what I can see, the flex collective are in the ModuLR league of productivity, so I'm sure a whole slew of fun things will be coming our way).
