Best way to input sampler drum & bass sample parts

Hi, all,
Sorry for such a silly question, but I'm more looking for ideas to make things easier instead of going on non-productive wild goose chases.
My main instrument is guitar but I'm writing a lot of stuff for bass/drums with the sampler/midi. I have a Yamaha S-03 synth but don't know much about MIDI as far as channels, mapping and the like.
Do any of you have any suggestions from a productivity point of view if it is easier to use the synth/keyboard to play the drum/bass parts "live" (individually of course) or to use the step/grid editor?
I don't write extremely difficult parts and I know my way around the keyboard.
Thanks a million, and sorry to waste your time if your scanning this looking for something relevant to your own needs.

I think the best way is to play the lines on keyboard and then edit them in the piano roll. Tracktion's piano roll is honestly too clunky to program stuff from scratch (at least for me). I do use it to add very fast lines I'm just not capable of tho

You can do it individualy, turn of follow grid. Dont look at the visual grid, and make one long midi take. Then you can cut out the pieces you like, and use. Turn on grid, and it can be exact looped. But if you dont want to loop, then dont.

For Bass lines, I generally record live from keyboard to audio clip unless it's a repeating bass line, then I record to Midi clip, then edit and loop.
For drums I almost exclusively use stepchild and a VSTi Drum synth ( Drumatics 2.2, DrumKid or PuffnPys). I usually put kick and snare in one track, Hi-Hat in another, Misc percussion in another and Drum fills and cymbal crashes in 2 more tracks. I find this to be very quick and effective, especially with the flexibility of being able to put an instance of stepchild into a clip and not just into a track. I have about 30 presets that I can drop into a clip, set the clip to the length I want and away I go....
I'm sure there are lots of other ways to do it, but this is just one way that has worked very well for me...
Hope this helps you out...

I have a question regarding the piano roll and ,...using a keyboard withthe sampler.
How do I set certain keys to play a sample (or drum loop, or guitar riff) without changing keys?? I wann assign parts (small loops)to sections of my keyboard.
Is it possible?
thanks

load a sample into the sampler.
the new sample will be showing in a list on the left hand side of the sampler UI.
select the sample.
note the arrows that have appeared just above the horizontal keyboard - there will be one pair that are joined in as a bridge between notes, and one single arrow that is pointing to middle c.
The span arrows control the range of of keys over which this sample is mapped. Chnage them to limit which keys this sample will respond to.
The single arrow controls the root note of the sample. Change it to transpose the sample.
Load in another sample, and select it in the list. Edit accordingly to create your keyboard layers.

Ok,..I got that but what I am really trying to do is have one sample or loop playback in the same key.
If I set one loop for C1 to C2,...Another Sample to C2 to C3, ....but when I hit the keys inside the range I don't want it to change keys. This way,..I can hit the keys in an area without being so precise.
Would I have to add multiple instances of the sample an assign each to a key the range for this to work?

yeah, I don't think there is an easy way to do that.
Probably Tracktion is smart enough not to waste the RAM by loading different copies of teh same sample into memory, but you'll still need to laboriously load and map them all.
An alternative would be tp use some kind of pitch mapping plug as a way of forcing incoming notes to the note you want - fix the input not the sampler in other words...

actually, I think you could possibly use my MChord plug (real nasty and basic - AD80 needed something so it was hurried out and never finished) available from my site (in teh freebies section).
You'd need to make a keymap that basically takes each note and trsnaposes it to the note you want it to be.
All the notes in a given octave could be mapped to one particular note within that octave, which is I think what you are asking for.
