Can you do slip editing?

When using other DAWs, one of the things I really like doing is being able to easily change the start time of audio clips. Typically, this is done with the mouse wheel while hovering the track. This is available in FL, Reaper, Cubase, etc.

For example, when tracking metal-style guitars, you may record four bars, shorten the clip to one bar, put it on two tracks and then audition the other three bars against what is playing in the first track.

Something simlar seems to be possible using the options in the inspector panel, but not convenient enough to be practical during recording/mixing.

Will this be included in an upcoming release?

Hold on, what exactly do you mean by slip editing here; it sound like you are talking about the ability to adjust the edges of a clip?

The way that I understand it, slip editing causes the clip to be a kind of window in-which the audio can be moved around freely.

In the video linked to below, right around 2:12, the presenter shows how it is done in Reaper.

Ah ok. It kinda threw me that you said it was done with the mouse wheel and then mentioned Reaper but in Reaper that's actually done with alt+left click drag as you can hear in the video.

In bitwig you can do this, although it's a little more indirect than doing it right on the item. You would open the audio clip in the editor (double click on the clip), and then move the audio event around within the clip. You'll see that the event itself has a solid bar above the waveform but under the ruler that you can grab to select, while the overall clip boundaries are represented by the bar in the ruler. Hold shift to defeat snapping. Maybe that's preferable though since you get a nice big waveform display that way.

Thank you Ogopogo. I am not near a computer today to try it out, but I will.

Having said that, it seems like this would be a great feature to have in Bitwig as it would make the workflow for creating clips from audio files easier and more intuitive. Also, I don't believe Bitwig currently has anything being done with alt+left click drag over clips. ;)

I was thinking Bitwig may have this, and it would be a selling point over Ableton Live for me. Are any of the devs able to comment on this?

Post

yeah, there should be a key command/drag for slip editing

Yeah, sounds like a good idea - send it to tech-support as a FR, I think it would fit in rather well.

Cheers,

I can do that, though I don't know where to send a feature request. Is there an email address on the bitwig website?

Ok. I put in a feature request today. I included the video above as well as these two:

Good use:

Would have benefited from it:
