I think the preorder price which was something around $91 bucks (with gift card) at Sweetwater changed many minds.

Absolutely. I had in my mind that $99 was what i was willing to pay, and with the Sweetwater gift certificate, I got it for around $90.

No doubt they get that there is a psychological barrier to buying once the price hits three digits.

Just a note on my quote about going into a music store and getting all the instruments for $100. My very next line is that acoustic instruments sound better than the digital recreations of them, so it is not a perfect comparison. Still the point is ST3 contains lots of instruments for not a lot of money.

I just looked Dimension Pro costs 100 bucks. The Wusik bundle, $100. Which is likely to be a more useful 100 bucks spent, Dim Pro, Wusik or my upgrading to ST3? BTW I got Dim Pro for 20 and Wusik inexpensively do to the kindness of a Christmas fundraiser and enjoy playing with both, though they are lets say old skool in sound.

More closely matched might be Goliath at $500 with 40 gigs of sounds or Mach 5 at $460 with 45 gigs or of course Kontakt 5 at $400. In demo listening I think ST3 sounds roughly equivalent to the included instruments in these three and I'm comparing the upgrade price for ST3 versus full retail for the others, since I quality for the upgrade. I personally would not spend $250 for ST3, but would wait for a sale closer to $100.

I got K5 for 200 on sale and I consider it the best 200 I've ever spent on music software as it is obviously much more than a rompler. K5 on sale for $200 versus ST3 at $250 would be a no brainer for K5, even $200 versus $100 would still be a win for K5. If you don't own K5, buy it. Both Goliath and Mach 5 require the hated ILok or I might look more closely at them. Goliath is on sale for $250 and sans ILok and the problematic Play engine, it might well be a better investment than $250 for ST3. It is aging, but seems to have some excellent instruments. If it were a K5 library I likely would buy it.
However owning KU, having no desire to ILok, qualifying for the upgrade pricing and enjoying playing with new instruments, I see no better way to acquire lots of them for $100 bucks. Do you?

Looks like ST3 has about 25 gigs of new sounds + the older ST2 library (6.5 gigs) + some Philharmonic stuff.

A few questions:

1) Have the instruments that were a part of ST2 been renamed in ST3 or are all the names of the presets the same as they used to be in ST2?

2) Will importing older sampletank add on sounds be easy? Importing an entire library at the click of a button (sonic synth2, samplemoog, etc... ) into ST3 or will we have to import patches one by one?

Hmm. When you add up the various samples for STank2 via the other VIs (i.e. MSO;SS2;SM;ST), you get about 21GB + Library. How much of that library is part of the new 30GB of STank3?

In this thread Peter said (emphasis mine):
Peter - IK Multimedia wrote:All of SampleTank XL is in there, no Expansion Tanks are included though. There is only some Miroslav Philharmonik content and it has been reprogrammed to add articulations through keyswitching etc

There are only some of the Miroslav sounds. So [totally new content] would be a vast majority of the library, around 25GB (over 4,000 new instruments) .
I think original ST2 XL was like 6 or 7 GB? Plus some of miroslav? So your guess is as good as mine…

You need to limit that rez, bro.

I think this ST3 upgrade is very good for the ST2.5XL users but not so for the Miroslav users like me.

The ST3 banks have been recreated with new samples for all but the Miroslav instruments :( . So aside from the fact that the new engine allows the use of articulations, which is great, I won't get round robins at all.

And I would like to know the list of articulations for the Miroslav Philharmonic instruments: for example, does the Trumpet have legato, staccato, mute, portato short and long etc.? And what about the Violin, does it have tremolo, spiccato or staccato, legato, glissando, trills?. :?:

Post

Not sure how much it helps, but I found a screenshot that showed the bottom part of the 11 Violins articulations. It looked something like this.

11 Violins
> Pizz 1
> Pizz 2
> Soft
> Stacc Short
> Staccato
> SulPonte Fast
> SulPointe Slw
> SulPointe Trem
> Tremolo

I agree that reworking the Miroslav stuff instead of making new recordings is disappointing.

I guess you did not see this from Sonic Reality... I think Microslav is a Sonic Reality product... so I guess you can expect an update/upgrade to Microslav in the future.. I guess for a cost..
Sonic Reality and eSoundz have ALWAYS been the leading supplier of third party sounds for the SampleTank platform, and we plan to continue that tradition with SampleTank 3! All of our current SampleTank 2 titles will be updated to SampleTank 3 format after it is released. Until then, we are offering an amazing deal on our standard SampleTank libraries with a FREE UPGRADE to the SampleTank 3 version of the library when it is available: Just $10 EACH for all standard SampleTank 2 Instrument and ReTank libraries.

wondering why no ST 3 player?

there is money to be made...

wow!!! they want you to update your Sample Moog, Sonic Synth, Sample Tron libraries to ST 3 libraries for a fee...

i understand now their marketing appoach... they could not release this information 18 months or a year ago...

ik multimedia's marketing... "hey!!! look at my left hand (they do not want you to see what the right is doing)"...

again... the upgrade price is not bad at all for ST 3... but the way ik multimedia handles their business is another story...

This is a Sampletank upgrade not a Miroslav Symphonic update. Made by Sonic Reaity? LOL Ever heard of Vitous and that IK bought the rights on his Samples in the past? Also i read the advert as that what it is: Buy SampleTank Expansion now for $10 and get free update when they be released for ST3.

You Guys find something to bitch about even out of nothing.

I don't know if that was directed at me... But, the only thing I am bitching about is lack of Information... I will be happy to pay my $149. for ST3 next week... My biggest problem is, where to buy it... From Sonic Reality ( for the extra libs) or IKM, etc..

question... since sonik synth, sample moog, sample tron patches will not be included in the ST 3... and... if 1 + 1 = 2... dont you think that the sonik synth, sample moog, sample tron patches will be sold in a ST 3 format? you talk of "something to bitch about"... well, i currently own sonik synth, sample moog, sample tron but there is a fee to update those sounds to the ST 3 format...

for some who have been with ik multimedia for years... i.e. 7 to 10 years... "this something to bitch about"!!!!

They're not being upgraded to ST3 format. They'll just be playable in 64 bit hosts.
