Jack is NOT a replacement for Rewire.

Hello,

I think bitwig is great in a lot of what it does so far, and, it's so new and already doing great (a few things that bug me, but, that applies to DAWs that are 10 years+old too).

HOWEVER, I just want to say for those researching, that, especially for OSX (and windows I think), if you're planning on using another DAW with bitwig, then, JACK is NOT (currently) a viable replacement for rewire.

I'm not sure on the mechanics of the whole thing, but, either bitwig and/or JACK OSX are working on stuff that may improve this, but, currently, ALL JACK does is allow you to route audio into different apps (and even this is, to me, a headache when compared to rewire). It does not sync up cycle/loop points between DAWs, it doesn't sync/line up playhead position/transport position. Meaning, if you want to play a cycled bit of a song, and you select say, bar 4 to 5 in bitwig, it won't do the same in logic/any-other-DAW, and vice versa. And, if you go to bar 15 in bitwig, nothing happens in logic/any-other-DAW, it won't go to bar 15, the playhead will stay in the same place in logic/any-other-DAW, and vice versa. And, if you press play in bitwig, then, logic/any-other-DAW won't start playing (so, this means that it's hard to get stuff in time), and vice versa.

There is a workaround for playhead position and playing/stopping/recording by buying an external transport control and getting them to work for both DAWs, but, as far as I'm aware, this still doesn't allow syncing of cycles/loops.

Also, I think there might be a way to sync midi somehow for transport being in time, but, I'm not sure and haven't found it yet.

This is a massive deal breaker to me, and, I can see why it is to others now.

On the bitwig website from what I read, I was personally under the impression that JACK would do everything rewire would but better and it was open source. However, this is definitely not the case, as shown above. I just thought that others should know.

I'm not trying to speak against bitwig, like I said, the programme is amazing in so many ways (especially considering its age), but, in my opinion it would be SO much better if it was rewire enabled, or, if there was a relatively simple alternative to rewire (or combo of programmes) that do everything that rewire does.

For linux, JACK appears to be a rewire replacement (not sure, but I think so). I can only speak from OSX, and, from here, it's seriously lacking.

If anyone has any tips on how to do all of the things above that rewire does but that I can't currently do on OSX then I'm up for hearing any suggestions. :)

Generally, I just wish that Bitwig would get rewire. This would make me very happy.

Of course JACK can never replace Rewire - since ReWire is a protocol to synchronise the transport controls and playback timing between two devices while JACK is just a jack; an audio pipe from somewhere to somewhere. And it gets worse: the latency of the audio piped through JACK is not fixed (to allow for latency compensation) but varies due to what other tasks taken care of by the CPU in any moment.

JACK is indeed a transport control master, it's just not implemented in Bitwig yet.

And to clarify it for the OP, yes, JACK is a complete Rewire replacement under Linux. Its incomplete implementation in Bitwig has led people to a misunderstandinhg of exactly what JACK is and does. I suspect that its OSX version is not identical to that in Linux, but since I don't use OSX I really can't say for sure.

A couple of older article with some details regarding JACK:

JACK Sync: A Primer For Linux Users
http://www.linuxjournal.com/node/1004080

Knowing JACK: Exploring The Jack Sound Server System

Those articles were written for Linux users, I don't know how applicable is any of the information to JACK on other platforms.

Best,

That looks promising, StudioDave! I failed to mention that I tested JACK on Mac OS so maybe the varying latency issue I found was a Mac thing? After my JACK test a few versions back I have looked into other solutions, so it might be that I'm not aware of recent updates.

Is this a total third party rewire replacement for integrated/built-in rewire?

Does it do everything rewire does?

If so, amazing!!! :)

From my reading, it seems that it works in any daw that accepts VSTs. Is this correct?

tried only with Reason, but u can also drop an FL Studio as VSTi into BWS that one also can be a ReWire master /win/, I've just wanted to try the simplier /easier routable/ version first, ofc. a native solution would be the best
