way back in the day Jules said a step editor was on the list.
We haven't heard otherwise, so I guess it could happen.

I'm visiting my brother on vacation and introducing him to Tracktion. He's already having fun with the demo and has said he'll probably buy it.
While using his pc, I've had a chance to download a number of plugs and community apps like stepchild that aren't available for os x. I can see what the fuss is about now. Stepchild is a very useful plug. It's a shame that noone seems to be able to find the time to port it to the Mac. I wish I could but I've never programming anything and don't think this would be the place to start.
Jules may or may not implement this or something similar in version 2 but that will never help those with version 1. Could someone PLEASE port this to mac os 10.2 and up?

I don't know the answer to your first question, but I think I can answer your second one...
I am assuming that "changing the length of the steps" you mean that you want to sustain notes longer. If so ,all you have to do is hold "ctrl" as you click on adjacent squares. The squares turn green-ish. This means that the adjacent squares will be "read" as one note...
if this is not the question you were asking, you can stop reading now...LOL
Good luck..

1/4 of a beat is as small as it gets...
however...
you could double the tempo, that would give you 8 cells per beat (1/8 of a beat per square), that might take some adjustment on the rest of your tracks...

other things I'd love to see in SC:
o A moving playhead showing where it currently is playing
o A way of saving a layout (channel + note + octave) and recalling it easily
o A way to name notes (so C3 = bass drum or what not) and saving this with the layout
o Ability to have different step counts - 32 is a nice default, but ideally it should pick up or allow entering the time signature and the "resolution" of choice
o Better patch saving and recall. The current "buffer" method has caused me to lose my patterns lots of time as I click a patch to quickly compare two patterns. It's be better to build have buttons for "add new pattern", "delete current pattern" and "clear current pattern", and a select list for patterns. Patterns should also be namable (e.g. "verse drums" or what not).
o I've noticed that the exported MIDI doesn't always exactly correspond to the notes emitted when the pattern is played internall, at least when note shifting is used.
o I'd like to be able to see all velocity curves at once, so that I could adjust the "flow" of a pattern more easily.
Don't get me wrong - StepChild is a fantastic plug and I use it all the time, but there's always room for improvement.

That won't be a problem...optilude wrote:o A moving playhead showing where it currently is playing
You can just save a preset...o A way of saving a layout (channel + note + octave) and recalling it easily
that'll be in there too! that one has bugged me too.o A way to name notes (so C3 = bass drum or what not) and saving this with the layout
Idealy! The problem is my music knowledge is pretty weak. I never quite understood timesigs. So that is probably why I just never got it to work. care to explain?o Ability to have different step counts - 32 is a nice default, but ideally it should pick up or allow entering the time signature and the "resolution" of choice
I agree and I disagree.o Better patch saving and recall. The current "buffer" method has caused me to lose my patterns lots of time as I click a patch to quickly compare two patterns. yup, this has always been an issue. The midi export is rigid. It doesn't incorporate the shifts at all, because I never figured out how to do it with the way I coded SC. I'll try again, since it's all in the process of being recoded from the ground up. SC was the first plug I had ever made, and since then I've learned a whole whole lot... so maybe attempt #2 will be better.o I've noticed that the exported MIDI doesn't always exactly correspond to the notes emitted when the pattern is played internall, at least when note shifting is used.
The reason all velocity curves don't show, it because it's only going to show you the curves for a selected bank. If there is no note-on, on that bank then is there are reason to show a velocity curve?o I'd like to be able to see all velocity curves at once, so that I could adjust the "flow" of a pattern more easily.
I always love suggestions! It keeps the wheels turnin'... hahahhDon't get me wrong - StepChild is a fantastic plug and I use it all the time, but there's always room for improvement.

Never thought of that! Still, if you have naming, you may want to make it more integrated?ModuLR wrote:You can just save a preset...
All I mean is, at the moment you have 32 steps no matter what you want. 32 steps over two bars = 16 steps per bar = quarter notes with 4/4 (right?). I may want to have a smaller or larger resolution (e.g. have 64 steps over two bars = 1/8 notes), and/or make a pattern span over four bars or three bars. Did that make sense?Idealy! The problem is my music knowledge is pretty weak. I never quite understood timesigs. So that is probably why I just never got it to work. care to explain?
Try to think like an end user.I agree and I disagree.Because I like your solution, but at the same time I REALLY like the buffer concept. Gonna have to think about this a bit more...
? IIRC, when you click a note, all velocity sliders for that note are shown, but not all curves in the buffer. I'd like to look at all the bass hits and see how they compare with the following snare hits and the hihat so get some dynamic in the pattern. Perhaps the current note could be shown most promient, with the curves for the other notes faded out slightly? The reason all velocity curves don't show, it because it's only going to show you the curves for a selected bank. If there is no note-on, on that bank then is there are reason to show a velocity curve?
