With ideas from the support crew, we came up with a way to work with video on Bitwig, as workaround.

You need:
-this plugin: http://www.energy-xt.com/index.php?id=0115 (not free, unfortunately, but not horribly expensive - if you really need video like me)
-some ReWire host that has a video ability, I used Ableton Live

What it does is when you insert the plugin, it becomes a ReWire master. Now when you start any software that supports Rewire, they run as Rewire slave and the transports are synced.

Steps:
-add the plugin to Bitwig project
-choose your slave host from the plugin dropdown menu, enable the small "PLAY"-button next to the host name
-run your video host. I had to run Live manually, it didn't run automatically I chose Live from the menu. Be sure you have 32-bit Live (or other host) installed since this plugin is 32-bit and it doesn't work with 64-bit version of Live. This doesn't matter in video usage. You also have to run Live once by itself before running as a Rewire slave so it has time to install the Rewire drivers.
-add the video to the Live timeline and open the video window
-you can now even hide Live - the video window stays visible

Now the transports are synced between Live and Bitwig and you can work with video. You have ALT-TAB to Live when you want to see the video window, otherwise it gets hidden. But that's not a major issue.
