Regarding what qualifies as a great musical, sometimes if the work is by an important composer but it doesn't do so well on Broadway, it can still somehow manage to survive in the concert hall, student productions, etc.

For example, this wonderful "comic operetta" (whatever the hell that means):

I'd have to add most of the above, but I forgot some Disney movies I guess because we think they are for kids, but I really liked :
The Princess And The Frog - this movie not only had some trippy animation, it's set in New Orleans and the musical numbers are ace.

I love Enchanted, although I didn't think the music was that great it's a great comedy romance. For good music I think Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid were my favourites of the Disney animations, but many had great music, Lady and the tramp, Jungle book, Aristocats...

I tend to think that the songs from many of the more modern Disney musicals are much more formulaic than in the past, and to be honest I don't really remember any of them. My daughter has many of those movies yet the songs just don't stick.

But films like Jungle Book - such great songs!

I watched Jesus Christ Superstar (film version) again this weekend as I bought it on BluRay and enjoyed every minute of it - Rice and Lloyd Webber's masterpiece for sure and the more I watch it the more I appreciate it.

"Sweeney Todd" - never the Johnny Depp version. Angela Lansbury FTW.

Edit: This quartet from Sweeney is so beautiful, but almost anti-musical, with multiple parts carrying themes from other songs - Sondheim is amazing.

And "Paint Your Wagon" because Lee Marvin gets to sing.

Yes must not forget Hair - I love several songs from it - particularly Walking in space and Good morning starshine (although as a story it's pretty lame)
