I set the pitch bend range to +- 16 semitones, this gives about 2 1/2 octaves over the range of PB messages.. (eg, E00000 = c0, E00040 = e1, E07F7F = g#2).
But now I noticed with Zebra that pitch bend changes (and other input modulating the frequency of the VCO?) is slewed quite heavily. Something like 70 msec.
For lack of a better explanation, if you make an instantaneous pitch change using a pitch bend message, it still sounds like it has 70msec worth of portamento in it.. yes, portamento/glide controls in the patch are zeroed. Yes, it's Zebra version 2.60, 32 bit, VST2. Yes, it's licensed properly. Yes, running in Bidule in Windows XP (.. yes, I know).
I tried mapping PW to another controller (Breath Controller), it sounded a little bit better but the effect is still there. Either way with a continuous controller you only get 7 bits of pitch resolution instead of 14 so it's a little sub-optimal (and like I wrote, doesn't fix the issue anyway)
Feature or bug?
