(my questions go farther, but i'll stop here). basically, i'm wondering if a sound was already in ST3 format, could the free version use it? .
No. As it stands, ST3 Free will only load the ST3 instruments released by IK Multimedia over the next several weeks.

As Stank 3 Free for example can't load samples from previous Stank's, are the system requirements still the same?
I would think so - what do you think might have changed?. It's "99%" the same software (i.e. only ST3 Free instruments / patterns / multis can be loaded, no others). Of course, as the ST3 Free library is smaller, less disk space will be needed.

SOLUTION

see that shopping cart icon that IK are so fond of?
Add : a 'Enable Legacy Import' - $20 purchase

IK get some cash, legacy users that wont ever pay over $100+ for 33gig of reheated samples get to use their old stuff for a lower cost. Everyone's a winner.

Except for those of us who paid up front. We'd get to feel like suckers.

In a word? Marketing.

Marketing people thrive on slogans, buzz words, jargon and ambiguity.

The thought is the more you make the consumer confused the more likely you are to sell the goods.

And, sorry to say, it works. People buy into the jargons and slogans and buzz words.

Remember the Wendy's ads of the 80's? "Where's the beef" became a household phrase, world wide no less.

Until then we all thought all burgers were made from cows.

Some marketing guru decided to question that and came up with "Only our burgers are made from cows. We don't know what you're eating but it ain't a Wendy's burger. Where's the beef?" :dog:

Can you guess what that jargon did to Wendy's sales in the 80's? And think of all the confused minds wondering...."Where's the beef?"

So why didn't they just say "What's in your burger (wallet - the latest run on slogans ;) )?"

Buzz words, jargon, hype...Marketing.

Confused? Join the crowds. :hihi:

Except that marketing advertisement was about the size of the hamburger patty in relation to the bun size and not that it was or was not hamburger meat in the patty. :hihi:

I thought the exact thing last night.. 20 dollars for an addon to import your ST2 samples. I have a lot of Xpansion Tank banks that would be nice to use in ST3 but no way I'm buying ST3 just for that ability. However, a small 15-20 dollar fee to make the ST3 Free version import the ST2 content would be a buy here.

I like that they made a ST3 demo though, just so we can trial it.

So as I proved in my dissertation, I'm so confused

the point remains: jargon, hype, slogan.....marketing. ;)

Except you have the full product and have had it for months. You also have the ability to resell it should you ever decide it doesn't meet your needs too?

If you didn't want what you bought why did you buy it? You bought it as the best option (I hope) you discerned for you at the time. There is no pleasing everyone all the time and it is not a secret that products tend to get released with the heavy version first and lighter versions later. IKM is not required to please you personally. :P

Could you imagine the Poop Show that would ensue? I would take a full day off from work just to refresh KVR nonstop...
You need to limit that rez, bro.

I am kinda swinging warm and cool toward ST3. Some things I like, some things I don't, some things make me shake my head in bemusement. Nowhere, though, has there been a 'WOW!!!' moment. It's really easy to imagine the developers kept in cells and only allowed to look at earlier ST products. There's been so much development over the last 10 years that ST3 really seems like an anachronism. I had really expected better. Oh well. It is what it is. ST3 seems almost like an afterthought to all of the iGadgets IK is putting out now, and it certainly seems clear to me that the iMarket is what is the most important to IK at this time.

Had it for months? No, about 1 month. A significant portion of that time has been spent trouble-shooting and determining which patches/features are actually useful to me. I didn't buy it. My wife presented it to me as a present, after I expressed my frustration at not being able to use a Miroslav harpsichord in a Logic X project. If my wishes had prevailed, I would be still watching this from the sidelines.
