Just one computer will be definitely a no-go for me. I have iLok, but don't like to buy stuff for it. Although the idea is good, I usually forget it somewhere, so the plugs won't work.

Other great developer also don't use iLok, but just serials, maybe some online check (although I don't know what they really do in the background ;) ). U-he for example. Great product, hassle free copyprotection.

PS: Just read Urs' copy protection post. THAT's the way to go. For user's hassle free and easy. I buy EVERYTHING from U-He blindly, because their stuff is great, their communication is great, their support is great and I can install their stuff on my 3 computers (studio, home, mobile). No freaking dongle I always forget somewhere, no 1-license-only crap.

I believe if you go the same route, you'll get a lot of buyers and no cracks anymore ;)

I do have a eLicenser dongle, but I must vote for you to talk to Urs about using his scheme. As everyone says, it works great and is hassle free.

Yeah, I run an eLicenser and 2 iLoks. Smoothly. But a copyprotectin withou dongle is way better than anything else. See also the issues Pace generated when they upgraded: http://www.gearslutz.com/board/music-co ... light=ilok

I kind of wish Lennar Digital would get a dongle for the next Sylenth2 just to tick off the EDM kiddies who stole Sylenth1.

Honestly I think it would probably result in people saying "Well Sylenth1 was so good i just had to buy Sylenth2 and a dongle"
:borg:

No need of dongle, see U-He. And the kiddies would still have to buy :D

Nielzie wrote: Ruben, you might want to contact your fellow dutch music software developers Rob Papen and Frederik and Floris from FabFilter to have a chat about protection of plugins and how they do it and why. Those companies seem to do fine with fairly simple non-intrusive protection.
I'll point out that the copy protection on all Fabfilter plugins AND all Rob Papen plugins has been cracked, so those might not be the best people to contact. I'd recommend contacting Urs from u-he. He's had much better luck keeping his products safe with a very user friendly approach. In all honesty though you probably shouldn't adopt a new copy protection scheme until you actually put out a new product. Forcing existing users of Sylenth1 to cope with a new copy protection scheme all this time after release is unfair and unprofessional. I'd keep things as is until Sylenth2 is happening (assuming it does).

Don't copy protection systems like iLok2, CodeMeter and eLicenser have software solutions that don't require a physical dongle? If so, that sounds like a good compromise between protection and convenience. Security is a part of life. There's nothing outlandish about wanting to protect your IP from free flowing theft.

I'm fine with iLok as long as I get two licenses on the same iLok-account, that I can distribute on two iLok-dongles. So I don't risk to forget the iLok in one of my studios ;)

I can assure you all, dongles are out of the question.

Dear Ruben,

I am working for over 20 years in the field of software protection.
Software protection is a double-edged sword.
Protections too intrusive or inconvenient for the user drastically reduce sales.

Moreover, as Microsoft has taught, piracy is the most economic form of free advertising.
Think carefully before you make a wrong choice.

Sylenth1 is among the most known and respected plugins for his great sound and also perhaps for his noninvasive protection .

Regards.

Freddy

That might hold true for big businesses, but for small businesses, piracy is a very serious threat. Of course Microsoft can make up for pirated versions due to their otherwise massive sales.

There is no one inviolable protection .
