The beauty of faders

I am using a 23' touch screen monitor for mixing tasks in my DAW, as well as for programming my softsynths.

I think its obvious but also worth mentioning that faders and buttons are much easier to use than knobs and rotary switches on touch screens.

Of course i understand why software designers often want to give their products a vintage appearance, but i believe that reminiscence needs to give way to functionality.

Therefor i propose to use faders more frequently in softsysnth GUI. May be even have specialized UI's just for touch screens.

Feel free to discuss :)

faders use more screen real estate, i cannot imagine how big bazilles UI would have to be if it used faders :)

of course, you can always create your own UIs using faders using midi learn/automation, this would be a cut down ui, as you wont have space for all... of the things you need :)

perhaps you could even theme the u-he synths?

I agree totally that there is huge room for improvement in GUI, some stuff I find very well designed: Ableton Live, Madronna Labs Aalto, FAW Circle, Fabfilter (one of the best around), Valhalla DSp.

But controlling from a touchscreen is another story. I haven't used Moni TR but if I remeber correctly almost all controls are faders. I also use lemur regularly and when designening templates I usually pick faders over knobs when possible.

But for some things the fader representation doesn't work as for OSC tunning.

But the GUI sometimes has to fit the overall "theme" of the instrument, as in Diva, or other emulations.

If i could, i would. But since i can't i am pointing it out for the developers.

The real estate argument is of course valid. Butthen again, a tab is just one fingerprint on a touch screen and doubles the real estate.

I just wanted to point out that, for example, i use the roland emulations on Diva much more then the minimoog, just because it has faders.

Use a decent host, switch to GUI-less operation.
Faders galore.
