Post

I thought I would add a poll to this thread as there may be a slight misunderstanding on my part (maybe others as well) as to the purpose of Tracktion fest... so I will throw it open to all of you so I get this right! 8)

Also...

Tracktion fest V.1 *questions* and V2 *suggestions* for Jules...

I am sure there are more than 5 – 10 people who are using Tracktion but very few will make Tracktionfest.

So I thought It would be a good idea to at least help those that cannot make it by starting a thread that will have all the questions that they have for Jules in one place so that it can be printed and taken to the meeting with feedback posted to this forum.

If you give me the questions I will take them there and ask Jules at Tracktion fest.

Of course for those that are going to Tracktion fest please let us know what you plan to ask as well.

Clearly Jules has stated that he cannot answer questions on the V2 release or features but that does not stop us making *suggestions* for V2 and asking questions about the current version, patches e.t.c

I have set out this guideline but it is just a guideline…

Tracktion V.1

Bugs + Patches

1.What would you ask Jules to fix in Tracktion V.1 if you were at Tracktion fest.

2.What would you ask Jules to possibly include in V.1 before V.2 arrives?

Tracktion V.2

The Sound on Sound review spoke about these possible new features

1.A possible music to picture feature (external machine control / sync)

2.Quick time playback

3.Possible revised piano roll.

1.What would you suggest as a feature to Jules for V.2?

Take your time and list as many as you like, this will likely be the only opportunity to meet up with Jules before V2 arrives so lets make the most of it chaps!

The more detail the better...Gentleman we have about just a few more days...

I think the clip editing facilities of V1 are its biggest limitation, so I'd give this top priority. I know a lot of suggestions have been floated out on this already but these are the things I think it needs to become the best editor out there (these apply to audio and midi clips - they should behave more or less identically):

1. Linked or "ghost" clips. This is absolutely #1 for me. Without this it's really hard to see track structure. Linked clips should share their color too.

2. Clip grouping. This isn't *essential* but it's pretty damn handy. I like the way Cubase handles this.

3. Simple click-and-drag clip looping, like Sonar's groove clips. This is the only big feature I miss from Sonar.

Things unrelated to clip editing:

1. Tracktion's track freeze is *much* better than Cubase's but it would be nice if it left a little more information about the frozen track. Ideally I'd like to still be able to raise or lower the volume of the track. I realize this is a little tricky given Tracktion's filter handling, but it would be nice. It would also be nice if I could still see the froze n clips in the track, ghosted out the way Cubase does it. That way I can still see what the frozen track is contributing to the sound and when.

2. Named markers. I really like the simplicity of the quick 0-9 markers but some named markers would be nice.

3. Either a marker track or another ruler track up top that shows time values. I usually want to see track positions in both bars *and* in seconds and I have to toggle back and forth all the time in V1.

4. Curve handles in automation lanes. V1's automation is overall much better than Cubase or Sonar but it would be nice to be able to program quick or slow curves instead of only linear segments. I like the way EnergyXT handles this.

That's about all I can think of right now. Overall I think Tracktion's great strength is its simplicity and directness so I hope it doesn't add so many features that it loses that. Personally I'd be happy if the only new features in V2 were linked clips and Sonar-style groove clips.

Thanks guys I am keeping a list and will print out for Tracktion fest. 8)

Short and lengthy detailed posts are welcome. The more sugestions you have for V.1 (Patches / bug fixes) and V.2 (feature suggestions) the more questions I can ask and the more answers I can bring back to this forum. 8) If you cannot make it to Tracktion fest help me help you. :)

Three more things for V2:

1. The ability to nudge notes around in the piano roll with the keyboard.

2. The ability to freeze individual midi clips to audio clips or, failing that, the ability to render an individual midi clip to an audio clip directly in the arrange view.

3. Something like expose in Os X for editing individual clips that would let you zoom in on an individual clip and then hit another key to bounce back to the previous view. I know you can hit a key to magnify a clip now but it would be great if you could easily get back to the previous view with another keypress. I really like that traction doesn't pop up a separate edit window like most other sequencers but it would be nice to make it a little bit easier to bounce attention among individual clips for editing.

Again, I think the linked clips and Sonar-style groove clips are the two musts for V2. I'd happily lose all the other enhancements to keep those. Right now it's pretty much a tossup in terms of productivity for me between Tracktion and Cubase or Sonar. Tracktion does many things better than the others but the lack of these things slows me down enough that it counteracts the other advantages. Tracktion with groove clips and linked clips would blow the big guys completely out of the water.

1. clip-based automation

2. improved time-stretch quality (mackie can afford an algorithm...)

3. skinnable racks with presets so if you just want a simple send, for instance, that's all you have to deal with, none of this wet/dry malarky.

4. more customisable display options (colours, collapsible panels etc. but no floating windows! :))

5. maybe a velocity layer or two for the sampler?

I don't mind when these appear (1,2...) as long they're in the pipeline... :)

cheers,
.g

  • A way to distribute T content other than archives : XML database containing info on a rack, hit import, et voilà (provided you have the same pluins btw).
  • Co-op as stated in a thread a few weeks ago (let me check where it hides and I'll dig it up).
  • Embedded SFZ player + language to take over T sampler.

Doesn't V1 already support this? You can draw parameter curves on a clip, right?

Bugfixes

1. Most important, by far to me, is to fix PDC in Racks! Every send effect I add to my tracks adds latency equal to my soundcard latency. So in my case thats 8.3ms per send effect! Not cool.

2. Fix the random graphical corruption.

3. Looping still sometimes skips the first note... And on the subject of looping, let me use a count-in measure when I record with looping activated (don't know if thats a bug or a strange feature)

T2 Features:

1. Piano roll midi stuff. Much better quantizing/humanizing stuff; maybe MFX support; notes that are added to the piano roll by mouse are 100 velocity instead of the current 127.

2. Group tracks, so you can 'collapse' 5 drum tracks into one track. Similar to Podium's implementation.

3. Rack filters inside Rack filters!

4. Improved Sampler, with sf2 support at least.

5. Possibility to use alternative mixing UIs, ie. design your own mixer.

6. Clip VST automation

7. Choice of panning law for volume/pan filter.

8. MIDI step recording.

9. Standard format for saving/loading/exchanging Rack Filter presets.

10. Possibility to automatically record multiple takes w/ midi and audio (with looping enabled). Each take is then grouped under the same track.

That about covers it :D

Ask him to fix the 16 bit mac render bug. Ask him if there will be AU support in v2. Finally when he is at peak drunkeness ask him when v2 will be out approximately.

Post

Thanks again guys. Its good that you are talking about bug fixes for V.1 as well as features e.t.c for V.2.

Hopefully Jules will answer qustions about V.2 but if he does not as expected, at least I will leave a printed copy of the *suggestions* for v.1 and v.2 with him.

Jules should certainly answer questions about v.1 bug fixes in any case. 8) I am particularly keen on the rack delay issue.

The only things I would add to the great list of amendments/additions posted already is:

1. Ability to take the start position of notes in a MIDI clip and save them as a quantize groove. Even better being able to get the 'groove' of a audio clip and save that as a groove template (as in old cubase: hitpoints- export groove).

2. I really like the Muzys/FL Studio trick of being able to import an audio loop and have it automatically 'beat sliced'. could this be incorporated into the sampler?

I'm a relative newcomer to T and so am still finding my way around.

I have to say that one of the things that attracted me to T was the lively and knowledgeable forum here at KVR and Jules' willingness to participate on a human level.

I thought y'all was just going to get blootered and talk shite? I mean I'm sure he reads this forum on occasion but do you think he's gonna be taking notes with one hand and a beer in the other? I don't know him or too much about the fest so maybe it will all be serious T2 talk. If I was him I'd turn up and I'd say "NO talk of T2 ya bastards! Not a peep! I've read the ruddy forum! Gimme a break! And that Bill Drummond guy talks the biggest arse I've ever heard! I'm here to talk football and birds and to fight!"
