i think i'd pass this one
but if you'd happen to record yourself while tearing off tape from your mouth afterwards,
i am well interested ;)

due to many years of recording everytime i do diy, in the hope of getting some good drill sounds and such, iam getting together a collection of painful moments-hammer on thumb=resulting scream and painful expleteives and other such bits :-o

The list of non-singer singers is huge.

Tom Waits, as mentioned...
Tom Petty, though I suppose he's "in key" a lot
Neil Young has made an entire career out of it
Leonard Cohen
Les Claypool
Lou Reid

Hmm... not too many female non-singer-singers out there, are there? :D

The list is bigger, but the point is that you don't need to sing in key to make meaningful music.

it's your voice ... never mind the past

call it alternative tuning and tune the other instruments accordingly

Thanks guys (especially for the tape suggestion). :)

The problem is, practicing doesn't seem to help. Probably because I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Finding a decent teacher is a bit of a challenge, too... :(

And yeah, I've looked into Melodyne but a) I can't understand it and b) it wouldn't help with live work, anyway.

For me, the biggest issue is that I don't "warm up". Granted, I sing quite badly even when warmed up, but I can reach higher/lower notes and, if concentrating, can stay on key a lot easier. But warming up takes time. I usually just press rec and semi-settle with the first take (I don't know if I've ever finished a song with my own vocals, due to that I don't enjoy warming up and recording multipe takes...)

put on a cd of your favourite singer and imitate.
and the singer you choose, better be within your vocal range. this method helped me a lot...

oh, a decent teacher will do also...but imitating is the best method that i can think of right now.

Eventide could whip your live work into shape with its real time pitch correction. But damn, so many bad singers out there seem to make a decent career, why should it even matter to you? ;)

 Yeah, I'm an idiot, but it matters to me.

For some reason, this gets marked as spam every time I receive a reply notification. Anyhoo, I shall try the imitation thing, but then I suspect part of the problem is that I'm really rather a fan of Dan Stuart, who couldn't sing in tune to save his life.

i learned my doughter how to sing by calculating the average (most common) frequency in her regular talking (somewhere nearby c#) I learned her to keep that tone in mind and use it as a foothold before dividing octaves in mind. If you can sing something perfectly in key in mind you will be able to do it with your voice

so main rule - think the tone before you sing it.
It sounds bloody obvious but i know it works

good luck

How about Edith Piaf and Nico from the Velvet Underground? Or that bird from Stereolab... And didn't Marlene Dietrich lend her honeyed vocals to a few films?

Or all the Spice Girls or Girls Aloud (except the mingers) ? :D

They all have something in common however.. They can all sing better than me :D
Music with dinner is an insult both to the cook and the violinist.

Cut your balls man, I'm sure that's the reason

I'm singing out of tune myself too :-o. At least I don't have to sing. :D

I use Yamaha's Pitch Fix to do the "cosmetics" on vocals, and sometimes much bigger changes (like generating vocals). I just bought a mic for my studio (and first of all for myself, so i can work with my own voice..). You can listen to the result here:

(yes, you can laugh as much as you want. I'm a Hungarian, my pronunciation is not perfect.. as well my intonation.. Learning in progress..)

P.S.: I love this song from BUSH. I hope in this case there isn't any problems with the copyrights. I made the arrangement too. Am i wrong?
