Maybe this is a dumb question, but I'll ask anyway.
Is Hive essentially a limited-feature version of Zebra2? I know this isn't exactly the case, and I'm sure there's more going on "under the hood", but as a Zebra owner, I'm wondering if there will be a reason to add this to the arsenal.

We can only speculate (well, Urs can do more than that) but I guess it is not just a Zebra subset. Supersaw is not really a Zebra speciality and if it has some sort of unison, then that is different from Zebra. I guess it will have its own filters too.fourthmanfire wrote:Maybe this is a dumb question, but I'll ask anyway.

I don't think it has to do with Zebra.
I think it may have something to do with the research did for the digital osc (supersaw) in Diva.

So, in short, what is unison?pdxindy wrote:We can only speculate (well, Urs can do more than that) but I guess it is not just a Zebra subset. And supersaws aren't a Zebra specialty? How come? With four oscillators with up to eleven voices each seems pretty supersawish to me..
Thanks for the info!

^ "unison" is pretty much "superwave" here and I agree, it takes a couple of tricks to get Zebra to sing a "nice" unison/superwave.
Although Hive will probably have superwave oscs as well as an "unison" system as in DIVA and Bazille for example.
standard superwave is basically a 7 voice unison. The way that it works delivers different results/characters.

I have two crescent wrenches to adjust the knobs. I'm ready to torque the knobs.
I have nothing to do with this giant wrench, but it could be helpful with making the bees work harder.

Unison is voice stacking.. which Diva and Bazille have and Zebra doesn't...fourthmanfire wrote:So, in short, what is unison?pdxindy wrote:We can only speculate (well, Urs can do more than that) but I guess it is not just a Zebra subset. the supersaw in Zebra is good, but not as good as in Diva. U-he has learned a thing or two since! The point being it will not just be the Zebra version recycled...

I know this may be getting off-topic a bit, but what "tricks" does 3ee speak of that are necessary to get Zebra's superwaves to sound good? What are my ears missing?pdxindy wrote:Unison is voice stacking.. which Diva and Bazille have and Zebra doesn't...fourthmanfire wrote:So, in short, what is unison?pdxindy wrote:We can only speculate (well, Urs can do more than that) but I guess it is not just a Zebra subset. And how is the supersaw in Diva better than Zebra's?
And I'm still a bit unclear on the unison term. What the difference b/w "voice stacking" (which Zebra does not have) and having 2,4, or 11 voices in one oscillator (which Zebra does)? Aren't those voices in the oscillators "stacked"?
Thanks 3ee and pdxindy and whoever else wants to answer

I think you have like me : Diva, Zebra 2 + Dark Zebra, Bazille and ACE, you need this or :p
But yes if U-he release something in synths, you must say yes ... :p

Good question!2ZrgE wrote:Really interesting if the synth brings sth new which isn't already in the other U-he products - or put it that way: do we need it if we have all U-he's synths?
Maybe it is a small simple synth for lower budgets, so for us who already have the whole collection, maybe the new one won't be necessary

Here's a Zebra patch with 3 different examples of Zebra superwaves, progressively better from left to right.fourthmanfire wrote: I know this may be getting off-topic a bit, but what "tricks" does 3ee speak of that are necessary to get Zebra's superwaves to sound good? What are my ears missing?

Just solo each lane and have a play. the last one is a true stereo superwave sounding noticeably better! (whatever you do, don't turn off the VCF filter there or turn down volume!

The supersaw in Diva is a different design mimicking the original supersaw from JP8000.
it's newer and different than in Zebra = better

With unison the whole signal path is stacked... including the filter... not just layered waves in the Osc. The new synth may or may not have unison. We are all just speculating herefourthmanfire wrote:And I'm still a bit unclear on the unison term.
