Hi. I was just wondering what the chances are of you adding per note automation support in your synths? I'm talking about Bitwig, where you can apply pitch bends to each note in a chord. It only works with their built in plugins at the moment, and their synth is quite limited in comparison to yours.

It would be a truly awesome feature, any chances of this ever happening?

Polyphonic aftertouch is already supported, if each polyphony note is sent over a different MIDI channel (so, up to 16 voices).

Ah, so I could use the aftertouch as a modulation source? But how would this work if I'm writing a chord progression in midi?

Bitwig doesn't support midi routing yet, but that should change in the next few days. Would I need to use separate midi tracks?

What I'm looking to do is use subtle detuning on chords. I was reading a deadmau5 interview, and he reckons that some of his sound comes from the inaccuracies of the hardware synths he uses, as they rely on voltage to adjust pitch.

Dunno about Bitwig. Can't each clip hold 16 MIDI channels in it, then you'd just select a different channel and tweak your poly AT there?

u-he synths also understand regular polyphonic aftertouch (i.e. using just one MIDI channel) - just make sure that the plugin receives poly-AT before it sees any channel-AT.

Polyphonic aftertouch and channel pressure (confusingly called aftertouch by many people and companies) send different MIDI messages. The polyphonic aftertouch message format:

Code: Select all

0xAn 0xk 0xv
In this format the k is the note number and v is the aftertouch value from 0-127.
Compare to channel pressure:

Code: Select all

0xBn 0xv
As you can see there is no note number in the message.

It sounds like Howard is aware that u-he synths are coded to switch to channel pressure if the synth sees any midi messages starting with 0xB.

So don't mix your aftertouch types and you'll be just fine. :) Most DAWs have midi loggers and you can check what you're sending into the synth.

Bazille already supports note per midi channel (works in Traction and Eigen D)... I assume the other synths do too.

Bitwig is its own special case and I guess that they will have to do something on their side before U-he synths would work with it.

VST 3.5 should be the answer but it seems complicated to implement. Until developers or Steinberg make the effort to make the new standard widespread, per note automation will remain mostly DAW specific.

Hell with Steinberg. They have no incentive to do that so better not wait for it.
