My machine number has changed three times today on my Thinkpad? Any ideas what could make this happen?

Have you been adding/removing disks or reinstalling Windows?

No! This would be an obvious reason... Is it possible that an nearly empty CMOS-battery causes number changes?
Another weird thing is, that my Desktop PC an my notebook share the same number since last night! It is exactly the same number that is shon when I hit "about".

EDIT:
Wait... I have a "network drive" installed so that I can directly access a shared folder on my desktop. But I don't have the network cable attached all the time, so windows might think that drive has been removed. Could this lead to my problem?

PLEASE EXCUSE MY ENGLISH!

er.. don't know then - maybe if your system clock is messed up, then the OS is getting confused about file times and dates, but that's very odd..

Hm... Seems like I found a patchwork solution. Hibernating seems to be better than shutting down. But maybe it won't ever happen again. I will ask for help when it happens again.

Thank you very much for your support and help Jules!

Just a shot in the dark here, but are you running any low level hardware emulated devices? For instance, some software will install virtual devices (like network interfaces) that may not retain an identical hardware profile from boot to boot. Also, depending on your motherboard settings, you could have a PCI or USB bridge that is reconfiguring itself at boot. Like I said, just a shot in the dark. Getting the identical machine number on two different computers seems a little fishy though.

thx for the help... but the problem seems to be gone.
