I've just added this to the rules:

Links (Affiliate links and link shorteners are forbidden)

Affiliate links are not acceptable. Any links must be direct and must not contain any marketing or affiliate tracking or redirection.

Link Shorteners, such as bit.ly, goo.gl, etc., are not acceptable and may not be used in the Market Place forum. Links should always point directly to the target URL so the browser knows exactly where they are going before they click the link.

I think the benefits of this rule outweigh the disadvantages.

I'm certain there are reasonable ways to handle such a situation when it arrives.

The new rule is there to protect the community from leeches who want to systematically make money out of other people's infrastructure (aka web shops). I don't mind signatures saying "PM me for an X% discount at Y".

I think it's good to get rid of people involved in affiliate programs who just sign up to spam the site. Maybe Ben could give these spammers a monthly fee to spam their products? Then it would be a win win situation for all.

They could even have a badge beside their name that says "Licensed to spam"
