^ OK, thanks for the tip, will probably set RMS to 3 and experiment from there.
Yes , INT is a blend/crossfade of FF and FB with max ratio of 5:1 according to the Presswerk manual.

I agree that the EL panel and LDR have a lag, but it seems that this would be expressed as an attack time rather than as peak vs RMS - there is no averaging going on - the panel is still reacting to the peaks (it's just not fast enough to catch very transient peaks).sascha wrote:The vactrol element in the LA-2A can't do true-peak sensing. Even if the light source is almost spontaneous, every LDR has an attack lag. So, a few ms are system-inherent. At least all LDRs I tried myself have at least some minimum attack in the ballback of at least 3-5ms.
Here I'll disagree. The point at which the LA-2A sends signal to the sidechain amplifier does appear to be before the LDR, but that's only because of the way that the original schematic is drawn. The LDR presents a load on the signal as it's being sent - effectively meaning that the signal has already been compressed before it goes to the sidechain (feedback). The Compress/Limit switch does bypass R7, which changes the load on the signal, but the LDR is still clamping down on the signal as it's being fed to the sidechain. There's a great breakdown schematic of the LA-2A here that makes it far more clear: http://www.twin-x.com/groupdiy/albums/u ... ructed.jpgsascha wrote:Also, it's not easy to determine the detection, whether FF or FB. The comp/limit switch (bypassing a resistor) is right in the middle of the resistive network, between the series resistor and the LDR. Therefore, the detection changes from almost FF in limit mode to FB in comp mode. We mimic this behaviour a bit in the optical mode, although our limit mode uses Interactive (INT) detection. See p.21 (currently) in the PW manual.
Again, these are all minute details, and in the end, this plugin sounds awesome no matter what.

emulations folder getting bigger and better:
still need to do 1176, Fair 670 ... at least these 2 more.
The others? well, I can't do em' all especially since I don't have any plugin emulations or something more solid to reference against.
Could also make an LA-3A tho

Seems like these vintage compressors are really tricky.
Many parameters change or auto-adjust per parameter/function.
here's a Fairchild 670 starting point: https://app.box.com/s/yl7r830ecw6lb5j0tv7j
Will have to make a couple more time constant patches for it and then get to 1176...

btw, regarding the Fairchild compressor, re-watched a video presentation about a clone and right underneath the video, there are these wave files with the unit and bypassed, A/B them to check out that the clone has this beautiful smooth saturation to it indeed.

Could the first post be updated with a collection or something?
Digging through the thread is a bit tiresome IMO.
Oh and, I'd love to see "clones" of the Neve 33609, 2254 (even though I do have the Nomad Factory one) and the old Abbey Road/EMI R124 compressor.

^ I'll update the 1st post soon, I wanted to finish 1st and finetune some more...
Hopefully the link would be there in a couple of days.
I can't do all emulations/styles since I don't have everything to reference against, we'll see what we can do...
Anyway, after you get to know Presswerk, I'm sure you'll want to make your own default patches instead... that being said, I think the emulations would be a solid starting point for a particular character/style to get people familiar with Presswerk's feature-set.

btw, here's a cool list I found of all/most of these classic hardware gear and software emulations.

OK, what I will do:
finish the Fair670 and 1176
finetune all against new references
do these more:
Vari-mu
33609
SSL Listen Mic Compressor (I can try but IIRC, it's filtered)
I would also do these but I don't have any references: LA-3A and Neve 2254 (Waves V-Comp)
If you have em', send PM so I'll give you a file and instructions do to a small test to send back...

Definitely looking forward to the preset collection.
To be honest, I'm just lazy. So I'd rather access presets than create my own this time around. And, others are more patient than I am in terms of finetuning. But I'm definitely looking forward to a 33609 and hopefully the EMI R124 (all revisions, as this one is an own beast).
I'm also sure that once PRESSWERK is out of Public Beta and on full-release, it will come bundled with a load of presets like SATIN did.

Sadly, I don't have them.
I do have the NF British Compressor (which is also a 2254), but I currently have barely any time to do anything.

Edit:
OK, time for fun: https://app.box.com/s/e483xe26e1qzld6dd0op
The link contains some init and "mojo" patches as well of some experiments, besides the emulation patches.
You'll find workflow info within each patch, hope you'll enjoy!
