While EDM is what it is, Sylenth is still a good sounding synth, therefore the expectations for the sound quaility of its (alleged) succesor are also very high.
It unfortunately becomes circular at that point too.
So many of the sounds you hear for it are EDM and so it gets looked over by others for being able to do anything else. Certainly it can as the vast majority of the synths have much more range than their pigeon hole ubiquity ever imagines. That is why it's important for the developer to start that with a larger range in their demos. And the Sylenth site is a flood of demos all geared to... EDM. I can hear more in its characteristics than EDM, but it's hard getting past the fact that, unless you doing the programming yourself, you're going to have to swim an ocean of bad EDM patches to find those gems that make the synth shine. So it is the MaryMollySpice kids doing EDM that kills it and the developers that cater to that only have themselves to blame.

EDM stands for 'Education Doesn't Matter' - right? (Or is it 'Everyone's Doing Molly')? ;)
Which is why I don't bother basing my assessment of a synth on the presets. If you have even a limited background in designing your own sounds, and even a rudimentary understanding of technology, you don't need to hear presets to understand how specific technology limits or enhances the capabilities of a synth with respect to the sounds that you're interested in.

I'm rarely surprised. I was a bit surprised by Bazille because I never got into PD synthesis way back when and I hadn't really explored it much in any of the plugins that I have that support it in some way.

Erectile Dysfunction in Men.

At least, that's what happens to me when I hear another Avicii song.

Still love trance (and even some "tarnce") though, but mostly released before 2008. After that, either I became too old or an average trance producer became too young.

Havent seen a public link for that.
Yep, haven't published it yet. There's a reason for that - Hive doesn't reset the filters properly on note start and the envelope attack is too fast. Therefore the sound example has a few clicking artefacts that would overshadow the other sonic properties in the discussion.

Apologies Urs, I must've hacked into a place I shouldn't have been...quite innocently, I must add.
I assumed there must be more soundclips around, so I looked for them.

Won't do it again.

On the topic though, is there going to be a specific 303 type filter? Or just the usual 12/24db approximations in the presets? Just wondering, and hopefully not opening a can of worms.

This is a very simple 24 dB Moog-ladder-type filter. Just like the one in the other synth, but here definitely without delay in the feedback path. It's all about how much one can nudge the resonance beyond self oscillation.

No Hive for YOU!!!
You need to limit that rez, bro.

Can't wait to hear some 303 squelchy stuff from Hive. This is where The Other Synth really shines.

"It's all about how much one can nudge the resonance beyond self oscillation."

mmm...what does this mean? intriguing. you saying that TB ladder filter goes
beyind self-osc, within 'the ladder'? (and without going pioo pioo..)

the implication i've gathered/'garnered' (... :p) is that there is a pull-down
action in there on resonance, but you seem to be implying otherwise
-viz Open303 thread - hey i wonder if i could mod a moog rogue to sound
like a 303? (ugh, why...it squeals like a mofo anyway with the detune sync,
but it could be fun to have a switch)
fwiw: comparing the SE 'moog' filter with Scoofster's volume-compensated
version: it doesn't lose volume with res, has higer cpu, but sounds better
overall - a bit like the volume compensation on Novation KS. Antto was
comparing the 303 filter to a series of HPF 'nodes', so i tried to reproduce
that in SE - interesting results, not necessarily conclusive tho'

just for fun -

my thoughts on the synths name, was in reference to the film resident evil. the Hive was the top secret lab the T virus was engineered. and what else born in germany succeeds in producing a convincing supersaw type sound, well the virus ti. Hive one could be a reference to both the virus and sylenth 1 in its naming. or maybe i'm just mad which is probs the case.

"Hive" works well on many levels. One of the first super saw-ish sounds was the Beehive patch of the Wavestation. I think this is where I got it from. Many sawtooths sound like many bees.

I just hope no-one thinks it's a referece to the Virus because of Hive's first three letters

TBH, I recently wrote a post about Hive and misspelled it as Hiv. And my first thought was literally - "Waaaait, u-he aren't making a Virus reference here, are they?"

So yes, for a moment I thought it.

You could still use a different name. Like PlacEBO LAtex or so.

So, when will it come out?
