How to see audio input volume before recording?

For the life of my I can find any reference to how to make the input volume show up in the volume meters before hitting the record button. As soon as I hit record, the meters chug away, but there must be a way to see that the volume is at an appropriate level BEFORE recording, otherwise I have to record a test track to get the volume right, then delete it and record again.

Highlight the input icon to show the meter for that input and then enable EtoE right above the CPU% bar... if you don't actually want the track to sound disable EtoE in the input control box..
