jumping in here:
- sound is great, smoother than most I've seen
- basic approach/idea is on target
- I like the idea of not slavishly emulating hardware comps
- seems to have about the right number of features
- interface is attractive
- definitely need to have three modes, one extra, in addition to the hq and non-hq modes, that is zero latency and lower on CPU. This would GREATLY increase usage of pw in composing, live playing, and mixing, including side channeling. It does not make sense to me that this would only or even primarily be a mastering tool.
- the m/s outlay makes no sense (for example, a good outlay can be found in the inexpensive ddmf New York Compressor or the FabFilter mb) as others have pointed out. Every compressor and EQ that supports m/s that I've tried has independent control over both m and s and stereo width (or mixture of m and s), an important tool as well as a powerful effect.
- based on preliminary work, side chaining does not seem to work on a mac running Cubase 7.5 - not sure, but maybe it has to be vst3 (I only saw vst2 in download). Side chaining is critical, especially since this is not multi-band.
Can't wait to test it out some more tomorrow!

Just a quick in-between note, due to popular demand:
I've just changed the behaviour of the input-gain knobs in M/S mode: starting with rev. 3194, they're located *after* the encoder, therefore setting up the M & S levels.
[I personally still don't favour it at all, but I'd rather not play the stubborn donkey when it's sort of common sense.]

You can perhaps already help yourself here: open up (or create) Presets/Presswerk/default.h2p and add:honjr wrote: - definitely need to have three modes, one extra, in addition to the hq and non-hq modes, that is zero latency and lower on CPU. !BLOCK_LATENCY_OFF=YES
This will get rid of the 16 samples latency our framework uses for processing buffers more effeciently. Doesn't work with all hosts or ASIO setups, though (you need to find out whether it's noise-/glitch-free).

You could always make it changeable eg right click on the gain knob and select modesascha wrote:Just a quick in-between note, due to popular demand:

Can Presswerk be used as a good master limiter?

Master Bus compressor yes!xx JPRacer xx wrote:Can Presswerk be used as a good master limiter?
...but it won't replace your favorite loudness limiter that's for sure, it's not designed to do that...

Ableton Live 9.1.6 (both 32 and 64 bits)
After loading a previously saved project containing Presswerk .... the preset name that the plugin (and live) shows is wrong! The plugin shows the name of another preset of the list (I think that the next one after it) but the settings on the plugin are correct!
This is not happening in Reaper.
Edit: I forgot to say I'm in OSX 10.9

Hi, registered to KVR because of this device (and in support of u-he in general...)
Using this is a 4-channel, two-band split DJing set-up in Live 9.16
I use Fabfilter Pro-MB to split each channel into two, and then back again...
Though I turn to this compressor to handle the actual side-chaining against the other channels.
This is better. Fantastic range, and almost perfectly flat... almost.
First, I wish it would default to completely flat (was terrified when I noticed an immediate 3db gain when I first applied it to the low/high channels).
Now, my readouts have it coming in at almost perfectly flat. All saturations and whatnot set to 0 (off). Live registers a regular 0.01db difference between the input and output signals in my chain. Alternately, Live reads a 0.00db difference when BYPASSED.
To clarify, it goes:
................ _ High(pro-MB) _ High (Presswerk) _
CHANNEL 1 - Low (pro-MB) - Low (Presswerk) - Channel 1 Return - pre-master - master
The boost (0.01db) occurs when passing through the Presswerk.
When set to HQ mode, the boost is significantly higher, at around 0.3db
This is very good... and with the dynamic range of this device, more useful than any other I've tried...
Just wondering if it should be possible to have a signal go in/out completely flat when active?
Thanks

Update for Cubase users: saw some old KVR forum threads on side-chaining in Cubase for vst 2.0 effects. When the effect (Presswerk here) that supports side-chaining does not have the "activate side-chain" button you can often use a work-around by creating a quadro group channel, adding a Sl Sr child bus to it, assigning the instrument/sound to be compressed to the new group channel, inserting the compressor into the group channel in the mixer, and keeping the instrument that triggers the compressor assigned to the normal output channel. As the volume of the triggering instrument is increased, the compressor's impact increases if Presswork Int:Ext is set to 100% Ext. Works for Presswerk but not as simple as the vst 3.0 button solution, and does not work for all vst 2.0 effects in the same way. But I may be doing this wrong ... even though I got it to work for PW.

are you using revision 3185? Is this happening with AU or VST? Could you send the project to support (at) u-he.com?
Thanks.
