It's not a question of clicking and regretting having clicked ( they don't get a click on their soundcloud statistics or youtube unless someone listens above 75% or more of the song). That's not a problem for me -- it's the clutter that it creates that can be very discouraging to use the Music Cafe. The post limit would be a good way to clear a lot of clutter.
This is my issue as well. I used to post regularly in the cafe, but it has become too cluttered. It waxes and wanes, but, when I turn it on, if I see too much of the following type of poster, I turn it back off.

http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/search.ph ... 4&sr=posts

Five posts, all in cafe, all about his youtube tracks. Sorry, I don't care. I have no idea who the kid is because he doesn't even really talk much about his music. It seems, to me, that it isn't really an attempt at engaging with the community, rather, it's simply promotion. There's no law against that of course, but, there's no law requiring me to treat all posters the same either, I treat that sort of promotion exactly like I treat junk mail, I ignore it.

While it's certainly not in my purview to decide who gets to post in the cafe, or elsewhere for that matter, it is ABSOLUTELY within my purview to decide what "I think" KVR is all about and how "I" want to interact with the site and the community. As was pointed out already, KVR is, first and foremost, a site about plugins. To be clear, that's how I perceive it, if the owners want to take it in other directions, that's their choice to do so, but it won't change my perception. So, if you aren't engaging the community in terms of music production and talking about tools, sounds, instruments, DAWs, etc., then I don't really care enough about your music to bother to listen to it, no matter what style it is.

Really, it's not any different from the few developers who are really just about promotion and not about engagement, I have their forums turned off as well. I think that identifies the difference that annoys me the most, if you are, or appear to be, TO ME, just about promotion, then I don't want to read your crap, download your software, or listen to your music.

Welcome to the new internet.

YMMV.

I think that this [the overarching question of quality of content] is endemic to the availability and ease of use of music tools today. It's good for people that wish to create but is bad for those that wish to see lots of high quality product.

Synth Edit - easier access to making plugins, including bad ones.

Bryce - instant 3D art.

Poser - same as above, but with more boobs.

Electronic music is the same. It takes time to sift through the work of those who are just taking baby steps or are so naive about their own work as to not realize it is "more of the same". But even that gives people joy.

So, I vote: same as it ever was.

Being averse to simplistic electronic music (dance genres especially), it's not my thing. So I don't spend much time checking out people's stuff. I DO spend time listening to other people's stuff after I post my own, to be participatory. I do like feedback, so I then try to offer some of my own. It's difficult when there're few pieces of music in my personal range of interest.

I liked ghettosynth's post above mine. I feel the same.

Commercial stuff or not, if the artist/dev engages here, it's more interesting to me than mindless promotion. I hate marketing with some passion, so it just turns me away the second I identify it for what it is.

I'm also for the 50/100 post limit.
It's too dumb when people use there registration just for the sake of promotion, it's like spam.

100 is too much. 50 is bordering on too much. Perhaps 25. Ultimately, a high post limit would discourage people to participate more than it would encourage them.

25 sounds reasonable.

While I much prefer my number of 500, I'm sure you're right, 25 sounds like a fair number. That's way too much work for someone just promoting, and nothing for someone who might be engaging.

Still, this thread makes me want to do a bit more work on the greasemonkey script that I was using before the foe limit was increased.

A minimum post count to start a thread makes sense but KVR is sort of abandonware. I can't imagine Ben taking this on. He never finished fixing the site layout after the upgrade.

Assuming KVR software enhancements will not happen, you can still program your wetware (brain) to filter out the spammy self-promoters from the regular contributors when reading the Cafe.

In case any n00bs are wondering, EDM stands for Extra Dumb Music. :ud:

Just as there's a minimum post count of 20(?) posts to start participating on the HPC section, there could be the same limit to start posting on the Music Cafe -- That could even be easier for Ben to just copy and paste that portion of the code from HPC and apply it to the Music Cafe section,
I suppose. ( just an idea, I know nothing of web site programming ) .

Yep, I think that people SHOULD be big-brother'ed to death.

OR, as an alternative, maybe it's not really so bad after all? ;)

in case you didn't follow the thread from the beginning, we're trying to "invent" a system to keep music-spam "producas" at bay in the Music Cafe :D

I don't think we want to prevent people from giving feedback in the Cafe, we want to make starting a thread in the Cafe (or perhaps the board overall) a "privilege" which is earned by making a certain number of posts. Perhaps there is a built in MinPostsToStartThread board setting?

This is a different issue. Someone who already has a high post count but their entire Cafe contribution is "greedy" - always posting new tracks but never giving feedback to anyone else. It is best to just ignore these people since there won't be a board setting to address this.

The only thing is I do not know if phpBB allows limitations on thread creation. I know VB does.
