Right on!
If you don't NEED to make music for a living, who cares?
Just wait until inspiration comes up again! It will, if it's really "inside you", as vurt said.
There are 3 kinds of people:
Those who can do maths and those who can't.

'Lost your love of life, too much apple pie', as wee Davie Gedge once sang. Err.

Aye, best just giving it a rest for a bit, like the kids say. I gave up for 2 years, sold all me guitar stuff etc, but the music f**ker always gets you back :x . Actually I was thinking of taking up golf, but the clubs cost too much...

Do you have a lot going on in life right now Dan?

Whenever I have a lot going on in life I am unable to make any music it seems. Making music helps me to de-stress but stress makes me unable to make music at times. Sort of a catch 22 if you will.

I like this statement. Music will happen if it's in you, ya can't stop it. :)

Kennedy, I believe :)

I always liked the simplicity of "don't give me that" in Everyone Thinks He Looks Daft. :hihi:

Anyways @Dan :
I get this from time to time. Probably not as bad as you are, less intense and more frequent, probably. I have philosophical conversations with myself in the car about why people do music , why write songs, why have lyrics that mean anyhting, why use music/song/pop as your medium etc. etc. etc. I become very cynical and disappointed by the whole damn lot.

It passes.

Don't force it - just wait.

Alternatively - go see some gigs. I always find seeing a good live band helps rekindle the interest :)

well dan,
you created one of my favorite tunes by kvrians, so whatever you're going through, I hope it will pass.
It's in you.

I wouldn't examine music or a lack of intrest in such as the culprit here. What you are experienceing is just a symptom among others that is manifesting itself with a creative block.

Ask yourself these questions?

Have your eating habits changed? Sleep more or less? Sex > or < than usual? Anything happen in your life recently that was really out of the ordinary?

If you've been a musician for a number of years, you'll see the pattern, however long it takes. You can call it Apathy, or depression, but the result is the same; you need a jolt to the system.

I've experienced it many times, not only as a songwriter, but as an artist as well through a 14 year carreer in tattoing; sometimes I'm just not motivated to illustrate or go that extra step to make something special.

You can't be on 100% of the time, this may feel like a little death, but it's quite possibly the chrysalys period just before you emerge & find youself doing things you never thought you were capable of. Shit, I went without drawing on my own for almost 2 years, & when I came out of it, I amazed myself.

What you need to do is not take it personal, although it might feel like you are betraying yourself. And most importantly, don't do anything serious like sell off your gear. I've done that on a major level about 4x in my life, & when I re-emerged, I was kicking myself HARD for turning my back on the tools that allowed me expression. Then I had to deal with an insatiable hunger to express myself with no valid means when I could not afford to replenish my gear.

So, let your DAW sit on the drive for a bit. Don't force anything, take on an activity that counters what you are used to doing. Try & do rediculous things like screwing the bosses wife or run naked & screaming through the street after dark smeared in peanut butter.

I always feel better after a good peanut butter run.

Just make sure you don't use the chunky, as it'll chafe your arse a bit :D

Writing music makes me feel bi-polar. The highs are huge, as are the lows. But, imagine your life without music... I'll take the ride, thank you... ;)

Try working without being in love with it. Callous as it may sound, its not about being in love, its about making music.

suppose that depends on why you do it?

I have a love/not love relationship with music and the music-making.

And right now other things in life are holding me from picking up on a new song. Like said before what's there won't leave you, but we all need a little nudge sometimes.
