Well, I've tried everything suggested except putting more RAM in my machine, and nothing so far has helped. Almost every time I open a project, I have to play it through before the audio is glitch-free. Although it's not the case that audio is *always* unstable, this is annoying, and is one of the two reasons I'm thinking of switching to Reaper despite Tracktion being pretty much exactly what I want in many other respects.
I did run a system monitor while playing back, and found that the earlier suggestion that Tracktion is glitching while reading from disk seems to be correct - on first playback there is a *lot* of spiking in the disk-reading, but not on subsequent playbacks.
Oddly, recording seems not to be a problem, at least not that I've noticed.
Thanks for all the input, folks!
