I explained in the post above why the GPL is very unattractive for me due to the issues with the VST licensing. (The same issues probably exist for AudioUnits on OS-X.) Otherwise, I am not completely against the idea of making HourGlass v2 open source and even try to sell it at the same time. I really really would like HourGlass v2 to be able to be used as a (VST) plugin, as well for it to have plugin hosting, which already exists in v1. The Juce licensing model does not work well in this scenario, if Jules/Roli are not paid for the commercial license.
asksol wrote:It may also be a good idea to finish most of the work on the product before starting the kickstarter (you don't need the commercial license to start this work). I'm sure people are more likely to pay for something they will receive imminently.
Yes, I would do it more or less like that, depending on the definition of "most of the work". Certainly I would be expecting to release a functional product as fast as possible, but not with all the bells and whistles HourGlass v1 currently has.

Resurrecting the thread to alert of the possibility I may need to take down the downloads for HourGlass. But maybe everyone who was interested in it, has downloaded it already anyway...

HourGlass hosts VST2 plugins, so it is under the Steinberg license terms. Due to high levels of procrastination over the years, I didn't get the VST2 developer agreement signed and accepted by Steinberg when there still was plenty of time to do it. I attempted doing that very close to the deadline this year (2018) and it now looks like the application didn't go through successfully. :bang: I will wait for a bit more for a reply from Steinberg, but if I don't hear anything from them, I have to discontinue HourGlass and also the VST2 version of the PaulXStretch plugin. :(

There is a chance I might do a new build of HourGlass in which the VST2 plugin hosting support is removed. Doing that isn't completely trivial however. I would need to update the code to use the Qt5 framework, among other things.

I'm not a musician, but I've designed sounds that others use to make music. http://soundcloud.com/obsidiananvil

There's no binary there, that's a source code repository. You'd need to build yourself, with some C++ compiler. And Juice, by the look of it. Honestly, really doesnt seem 'layperson' usable.
Also, I doubt much of CDP is ever going to be properly realtime anyway, and this is basically an alternative to using soundloom or soundshaper, so if you're wanting to get familiar with CDP, you'd probably be better off starting with one of them.
An idiot on Set Theory:

Hey y'all,

Does anyone have a link to the latest HourGlass for Mac (or would mind uploading it for me)? Can't find any working one and I miss playing with the software :)

Post

Long shot in case anyone is reading this. I just tried the standalone version on my new Windows 11 PC by launching the Hourglass 1.4.5 exe. and it's giving me a message "Bad state when restoring audio device". When I go to "Preferences / Audio" there are no soundcard/audio devices listed and it says "Device no longer present on System".

Any ideas?

Posting this in the hopes this somehow ends up in search engine results etc.

Download links for HourGlass are apparently still floating around somewhere, I occasionally get requests from Google Drive to get access. I am not planning on allowing the downloads again, and they would be pointless anyway, especially for MacOs users. The OS-X/MacOs build is hopelessly outdated and won't run on any new MacOs versions even if you bypass the binary signing/notarization required by Apple these days. (This was confirmed a few months ago.) I wouldn't expect the Windows version to work that well either anymore. No testing/development has been done even for Windows 10, let alone Windows 11.
