Finally catching up with Hive, and this thread. It's fun! I think the "less is more" plan is working. Modulating mod depths would be great (as would a modmapper or two), but don't go too far. There's still plenty of variety on offer...

Sendy wrote:I've heard mention of Hive's low end being less bright in comparison to Sylenths. One trick I think Sylenth is doing, is switching off the bandlimiting/antialiasing for bass-range notes. Playing in the middle and top range of octaves, you can see how each note has a slightly different bandwidth (what I call the "skyline" effect, because that's what it looks like on a spectrograph). But when you go below a certain note, around C2 or so (guess), all of the notes have full bandwidth that extends up to the top of the spectrograph (and doesn't appear to reflect back, either).
Isn't that just inherent to the way the way mipmap oscillators work (not that I know anymore than what has been posted in this thread about them)? Urs mentioned Hive having three switches of mipmap tables pr octave opposed to Sylenths two, sorry if I misunderstood and this isn't relevant:
Urs wrote:Now, about those oscillators…

Both Hive and Sylenth use the IMHO fastest possible way to render static waveforms. Its called mipmapping, or multisampled waveform cycles which are switched based on pitch. Depending on which key you press you get either the full spectrum, or a spectrum up to, say, 17kHz or something in-between. Sylenth has 2 zones per octave, Hive currently has 3. Therefore they switch at different keys, so that conparing waveforms at the same key yields results either in favour of one or the other. A fair comparison would use not just one pitch, but several.

Hier is such a fair comparison:

Sylenth Gs2:

Here you see a nice full spectrum sawtooth form Sylenth.

But what's that? - Something seems to miss in Hive. OMG, there'll be ringing on the edges of the waveform!

But what happens if we go 3 semitones down?

Ugh!

Ahhh! - Seems like at the F, the picture has turned the other way round

You see, it's the same basic technique. As it powers Sylenth, we think it's tried and tested and hasn't been in the way of making Sylenth one of the most popular synths out there. Therefore we think this technique is good enough for Hive. It btw. also powers the oscillators of many other synths out there.

Cheers,

- Urs

Now I'm swinging to the side of preferring Hive's filters over Sylenth's. I also really like the oscillators in Spire, but it's filters leave me cold (no emotional connection).

Here's me messing around with the dirty highpass filter on a 303/PWM type sequence. It's just an initial test but already there are some lovely nuances in there.

@ V-GER: It's too late for me to read that (going to bed) but Hive doesn't exhibit the behaviour I mentioned in Sylenth. If you play a low note, it cuts off at the same point it's higher octave brethren do. In Sylenth, there's a hard split point where it goes from bandlimited to full frequency range.

Though in all fairness, all of the bandlimiting is high enough that it never really comes into the noticable range of human hearing, unless you went out of your way to reveal it.

Been playing with Hive for a few days and bought tonite, to get the discount.. I like that is is easier to operate, then some of your other products.. (I like them too, working up towards buying everything)

I couldn't figure a way to automate panning?.... Is there a way to do it.. If not I think it would be an import feature...

Never mind;.... found the pan..

Thanx

+1

please don't feel pressured to rush the release. a few more weeks is no hardship while Hive is progressed to completion. personally i'm hoping the B-Y-O will feature but I am confident whatever happens Hive will be a joy. :)

yeah I don't like any of the other u-he synths but I like Hive

Here's quick demo of the presets I've come up with in few days. I think HIVE is my favourite U-he synth because it's so fast to program. I want to see oscillator sync though in the future and maybe some more mod targets, like another mod slot knobs...

Today i've finally buy Hive, it's an excellent synth indeed. I like how fun and easy it is too program and the design is easy on the eye. I'm looking forward to the final version.

Awesome! Are you going to do tutorial videos or sell the sounds or something?

I was thinking of selling the soundbank. 100 sounds for about 10-15 euros... But I am curious if they will add for example oscillator sync or other features so I of course would like to make use of them :)

Btw i really hope that the final version won't change the preset. I've been designing sound like crazy with this synth, and i'd be dissapointed if the final version will render my preset unusable.
