Today, in the mail, I received the February issue of Keyboard Magazine. Hans Zimmer said he used a bit of Zebra in the "Interstellar" movie. I just saw the movie: very intense. I tried listening for Zebra in the movie, but I didn't hear anything that was obviously Zebra, though I don't doubt it was there somewhere.

AFAIK a few of the organ sounds are Z2.

Howard,
Interesting, I wonder if it was pipe organ (I've heard at least one good pipe organ patch for Zebra). A lot of effort was made to use a real pipe organ (in London) for the movie, though Hans Zimmer wrote much/all of the organ music with a sampled (software) pipe organ (sounds) that is not Zebra.

I read an interview in internet some weeks ago about interstellar. If i remember correctly, Hans talks about his first steps for the score based on the virtual instrument from Hauptwerk "Father Willis" organ and the decision to go to London's Temple Church to record the pipe organ...

Sorry can't remember exactly the url of the interview.

Hauptwerk yes, though it mentions the Salisbury Cathedral organ sample set in the Keyboard article......though I do see the Wallis name on Hauptwerk's website, associated with the Salisbury Cathedral.

The 'Father Willis' organ is the Salisbury Cathedral organ.
A life without a Modular is possible but pointless.

Why assume that the sampled and synthesized sounds are replaced? The usual HZ method is to layer sounds.

Howard,
From what I understood from the article, all of the Hauptwerk was replaced with real pipe organ. It is quite possible that some Zebra was layered on top of the real pipe organ. I know Hans Zimmer is lurking in the shadows somewhere. I'm sure he'll reply any second now....

Maybe it was used for foley sounds.

Ah, that makes sense - if the 'Hauptwerk' was samples of the real organ that replaced it.

Post

Howard,
Though I'm almost certain the sampled pipe organ sounds were from a different pipe organ, than the real pipe organ used in the movie.
