I haven't got Tracktion 3 so I'm not sure how much help I can be. Does the logfile still say it can't write to the settings file? I assume that's not a problem in your other projects.

You say you deleted the first settings file without a number added to .settings. If you open and close another project, what does the logfile say? Did it successfully write to the settings file?

What are the last modified dates of the other .settings files? Is there a new one?

Can you open the project file, merely to read, in NotePad or similar?

I don't know if T3 has .trkedit files, but did you try altering the suffix to stop the edit being opened?

Well the faulty project file still doesn't load, and I still have to force quit Tracktion, but the logfile now says 'loaded edit'.
The other edits load fine and this is written in the logfile.
There are over 5000 settings files! It's created todays one, which is the one without a number. Settings file number 2 is the earliest (2011), and they become more recent the higher the number. E.g. file number 5337 is dated 13th Jan 15.
The project file opens with notepad.
I've never changed the suffix.

There really shouldn't be all those settings files there. The settings file is overwritten each time T3 is opened. Might indicate that T can't rewrite the file. Anyway I would delete them all and then see if more settings files are written subsequently. They shouldn't be.

I would guess that T3 always reads the one without an added number (which was deleted and, I assume, later recreated) and tries to rewrite it but can't, so adds a number and increases that number until it can write one with a unique number.

If it isn't a permissions problem, I don't know what else it can be.

Oh - if you want to change your settings and keep the changed ones, you might have to take the number off the latest file each time you exit T3.

Ok, I've deleted all of the settings files, and the project still won't open. However I have just downloaded the T5 demo and it opens in that. The only problem now is that I can't afford to upgrade just now!

That's a good sign! Just as well you haven't upgraded - now's not the time with T6 mere minutes away! (Well, a few weeks).

You'll just have to put that track on your album after next. :D

For now, after each session, might be worth deleting all except the highest numbered .settingsNN file and renaming the .settingsNN one to .settings. I think that'll keep all your latest settings changes.

Maybe you could export the edit as an Archive file in the T5 Tryal and try to open the Archive file in T3. :?:

Thanks for your helps guys! Much appreciated.
I will give those suggestions a go. I mainly wanted to get into the edit to downsize it a bit so should be able to do that in the T5 demo. And thanks for the tip off about T6. I will hold off for that. I hope it doesn't cost any more than the current version. :tu:
