I've been working on an sfz sampler program for a while, using keyswitching. But I'm getting totally confused. Is midi note #36 going to trigger C0 or C1 in MuLab?

That depends on the value you have set for "Middle C Index" in Preferences. If Middle C Index is 4, the C4 = 60. If Middle C Index is 3, then C3 = 60. You then have to work out the note number you're after based on that.
I, too, would really like a "numbers, not names" option.

Search around the web for this topic and you'll see that it's an ambiguous situation. That's why the "Middle C Index" preference has been added.sluggo wrote:But I'm getting totally confused. Is midi note #36 going to trigger C0 or C1?

Since midi has been introduced there is a manufactor war , japan , us , and europe. there is no rule defined in midi standard.
This is why we have this probleme. You will get same problem with many Vst Vsti plugins. Best solution i have found is to add a midi monitore vst plugin in your rack or mux editor to see the right midi number.
Middle C is allways midi note 60 , midi range is 0 to 127 (in past so manufacturer used 1 to 128 in there syntesizer manuals)

Thanks, I didn't realize there was a preference to set. I knew that there is ambiguity.

To avoid confusion: You don't have to set that preference, the default is that middle C (indeed always note nr 60) is named C4, as that's the most common. But you can change it if you want.sluggo wrote:Thanks, I didn't realize there was a preference to set. I knew that there is ambiguity.

Maybe it would be more use full to replace the grid or add it in "Note status Monitor" with midi input data so we can see incoming midi note number .
It can be usefull for other external midi controler values coming into Mulab.
Sometime to much data can be sent to Mulab in complex setup . This way we can modify setup on hardward or add midi filter plugin before stack or vsti, in modular mode.
