Tracktion problem or MOTU midi problem?

Playing a lot of notes on my MIDI controller in Tracktion (Mac) tends to freak out my external gear REALLY badly. Like: they don't play, lights start blinking on and off alarmingly, and I have to power the gear down and back up.

Any ideas if this is a Tracktion problem (like it's sending wacky sys-ex stuff out, maybe?) or a problem with my MOTU Micro Express?
