So those of you following the Hive preview thread probably know I've been working on a Python script that can read patches from TAL-U-NO-LX and spit out Hive patches. The work is now complete, and ready for public consumption.

Hive -- The Juno Collection

550+ Hive Presets Converted from TAL-U-NO-LX

This collection contains some 550 patches batch converted to u-he’s Hive from TAL-U-NO-LX, a faithful recreation of the Juno 60 available at http://kunz.corrupt.ch/products/tal-u-no-lx.

The patches were converted automatically, through painstaking analysis of the various parameters of both LX and the first Hive beta. As these were converted algorithmically, they won’t necessarily nail the original patch to the point of passing a null-test, the character should still be there, and I’m pretty happy with the results -- in fact I rather like the fact that they aren't complete copies.

A couple features, such as LFO delay and mode-1 portamento, are not found on the Hive and have been omitted. You may want to experiment with binding LFO to aftertouch or modding it with an envelope if you need it.

Given the simple architecture of the Juno, the Hive patches are rather… sparse compared to modern synths and patches. There’s no unison or supersaws, the filters are always LP24/Hipass, no effects other than chorus are applied, the mod matrix is set up strictly to facilitate porting the patch. It’s up to you whether you’d like to keep the old school sound, beef it up with Hive’s new capabilities, or even double up with the original TAL patch on a separate instance of TAL.

I hope in a further collection to utilize the mod matrix to bring out some patch morphing. Using the mod wheel to morph from one Juno patch to a completely different one or even bind different aspects such as the cutoff or envelopes to an LFO, envelope or everything together.

Please let me know on the KVR forums if any of these are absolutely off, or play no sound on loadup. Could be a sign of a bug or two in the conversion script.

I'm kindof wondering if I should tweak the patches that use a gated envelope to get rid of the clicks since they're pretty terrible, and compounded by the dirty synth engine and the waveforms being set to reset (the DCOs on the 60 always reset their waveforms). Might screw with the percussive patches though... Hm.

So I took a couple days off from the keyboard and comp since my legs have been killing me and I wanted to veg for a bit but I want to get another release up soon.

First I'm going to bind the LFO pitch variation to pressure cuz holy crap does it sound bad since there's no delay and binding it to an envelope isn't terribly satisfying. Honestly I'd just use the vibrato LFO but TAL's can use waveforms other than sine which is necessary for some effects. Come to think of it maybe I'll repurpose it for PWM and free LFO 2 up for other duties if I can fake some sort of unipolarity with it.

As I mentioned above I want to do something with the clicks as well, without killing percussive patches. Rather than hard-coding it in, I'm thinking of using the second page of the mod matrix to do some optional modifications to the patches now that they can be turned off, and indeed turned off by default. Percussive envelopes as well would make good toggles. Maybe some sort of oscillator/filter slop toggles as well?

Anyway are we sure this is even legal ? Did Tal and their sound designers give permission for their patches to be converted to work with a compettitor's plugin ? :?

I tried replicating certain filter resonance and PWM behaviors from Softube's Model 84 on Hive 2, and even with just the "normal" filter mode, Hive 2 can mimic Juno sounds surprisingly well.

Thanks for the Juno patches, small issue: pitch bend is zero for all patches.
