It wasn't stupid, it was careless. The person owned up to it and tried to clarify. It got sorted out, thanks to others. Your own reply was rude and condescending. I'll take careless any day.basslinemaster wrote:What an incredibly stupid reply. It does NOT contain Trilian's patches. It does, and Omnisphere can also load everything from Trilian and the other way around.

Sorry man, when I said "yes is does" I was only referring to Atmosphere. Then I said: And you can even load Trilian in Omnisphere ... this implies that you own Trilian of course. Or at least it should have, I phrased it poorly.

Okay, this is like the 3rd video I've watched on Omni 2. I own Omni 1 and have been using it since August of last year so I'm pretty familiar with it.
I'm looking at the additional features and granted there are a lot. But, and this is where I and I think a lot of people have a problem with the upgrade cost, if you look at this in total context of the whole Omni synth itself, how much more are you really getting relatively speaking to what Omni 1 already had?
Omni 1 is a massive synth. I don't think anybody can even dispute that. I won't go through all the existing features. You can look them up for yourself.
If Omni 1 is, on a scale of 1 to 10, a 10, what percentage of that 10, on a scale of 1 to 10, do the additional features add? Honestly? A 2? Maybe a 3? The upgrade price for Omni 1 users is $249 or about 50% of the value of Omni 1. Adding even a 3 to the original synth, which I think is being generous, comes out to $150 in additional value.
Now, I know the argument is this. Omni 1 didn't have all that it has right now. Many things were added along the way turning it into what it is today and thus, given past history, Omni 2 is also sure to add many features along the way before we ever see Omni 3.
But, there is no guarantee of that. Additionally, how much more can they even possibly add to a product that is jam packed already?
Omni 1 is easily one of my 5 favorite synths. If I'm looking at it purely from a clinical standpoint, no other synth that I have comes close as far as features.
But is Omni 2 giving me what essentially comes out to half of a brand new synth?
That's where I'm on the fence. I think $249, given what Omni 1 already had and what Omni 2 is adding, is a little steep.
The ironic kicker to this whole thing is that if you never owned Omni 1 and are just buying Omni 2 for the first time for the same price as Omni 1, you are getting the deal of a lifetime because there is no question that Omni 2 is a vastly superior synth to Omni 1.
It's just a matter of whether or not it's $249 vastly superior to it.

I won't make my 13 points again (you can skip back a few pages for that fabulous fun), but if Omni 1 is a 10 (and it is) this is easily another 5. Maybe 6. 7. 9. If those 13 points don't do it for you, then it's worth less.wagtunes wrote:Okay, this is like the 3rd video I've watched on Omni 2. But we've been here already.
A lot.
Watched the video - thanks for the link, firepile - he forgot to even mention the browser incidentally. Not much we haven't seen but the sound quality was much better at least. LOVE the sound he made with the Erhu at about 5m. Staggering possibilities.

I own all 3 so for me upgrade is a no brainer.
The real question is what will I now do with my other 50 vsts - thus update seems to be the only synth you may need!

I wonder how the upgrade will actually work? Will it install as an entirely new and separate product? If so then I wonder if we can transfer all the existing patches with their relevant project gruping and ratings?
But if it overwrites Omni 1 (like the 1.5 update), then can we be 100% certain that old songs will sound the same and that the CPU hit will be similar? I written songs with 20+ instances...

Eric's answered most of these I think. It will overwrite Omni 1, and yes the claim is that old patches will sound identical. Stuff like granular has a legacy mode for this reason. CPU hit should be pretty much the same "depending on the patch" - I guess some of the new features, if used, might be a little thirstier.spirit wrote:I wonder how the upgrade will actually work? Thanks noiseboy! I've spent a long time rating and grouping almost all the patches and hundreds of commercial patches. I'd be horrified in I lost all that cataloging. Do you know where Eric's answering these sorts of questions?

Well I pulled the plug today. This synth has been on my radar for a while. Was able to get it for 15% off street price. Man I have so many other synths to explore still. I'm starting to think I have an aquisition disorder. This thing sounds amazing though and the ability to add my own samples puts it over the top. Looking forward to checking it out finally.

"ironic kicker"? Seriously??!?wagtunes wrote: The ironic kicker to this whole thing is that if you never owned Omni 1 and are just buying Omni 2 for the first time for the same price as Omni 1, you are getting the deal of a lifetime
I'm open to all arguments EXCEPT FOR THIS ONE!!
Please stop with these types of arguments - they drive me CRAZY and more importantly they are wrong, wrong WRONG!!! It's NOT the deal of a lifetime. It is a basic part of the NATURAL life cycle for practically **EVERY** piece of commercial software!!!
If you are 17 years old or younger you can bitch about this and I will understand, because you haven't been around long enough to get it. If this is the case, here is the explanation:
Commercial software gets better, and the price generally stays about the same. SIMPLE! It keeps current customers happy with new features, AND it also attracts new customers to the paying user pool, and the company gets to make enough $$$ to keep working on the software to bring more new features. And so it goes. AGAIN: except for a few notable exceptions this is how ALL commercial software works!!!
By YOUR logic, what should new users pay for Ableton 9? Yes, ****9****?? Three THOUSAND dollars to avoid delivering an "ironic kick in the ass" to users who have been on board since Ableton 1.0???? I guess new NI Komplete users should be up around $5,000. Lots of new features since they charged a few hundred bucks for the measly original. Oh. Hey. How about paying $10,000 for a new copy of Microsoft Office since there are some customers who have been paying for upgrades for just about 25 years? Do you think a person who buys a new Office license today is getting the "deal of a lifetime" for a few hundred bucks? Not even the people who bought into the comparatively pathetic but similarly priced original version would think that. Unless, of course, they were almost *hopelessly* self-centered.
Also, by your logic, if you plan to live long enough to see Omnisphere 3 which will probably be less than 10 years away, then Omnisphere 2 is not the 'deal of a lifetime', it's actually a RIPOFF, because those spoiled newbies down the road buying Omni3 new will be getting WAY more features for (guess what?) probably about the same price.
If you, or anybody else, believes that the upgrade price is not justified by the new features, I will listen respectfully all day, and carefully consider what you have to say. But if you, or anybody else, continues to make this argument that existing users are getting ripped off by having to pay more for the same feature set, then my ears will be so filled with the repeated sound of my own palm crashing into my forehead
