Oh man, what a fool I am (was). I thought Hive was something like a stripped-down Zebra. I just spent a couple of hours making some sounds, and... wowee zowee. This thing is like a crystal-clear mountain pond, belying its true depths, with treasures a-plenty to be found once you plunge into it and explore. :love:

Sure, if you assign one of them to pitch you'll quickly hear what they do.

Alternate is a bi-polar source, it modulates in a positive or negative direction, per note press. According to how much you dial in in the mod-matrix.

Constant just provides a constant shift to whatever you assign it to. If you assign it to pitch you'll simply hear the pitch set to a new value. It's static. It can be useful to push parameters further than the front panel allows. Among other things.

Random assigns a random, but constant value to whatever you assign it to. This again acts on a per-note basis.

It really is fun ^^. Right now, I'm playing with both Spire and Hive to see which one I like more. They are both steller modern synths that aren't far off. While Hive has a much more lush organic/analog sound, I find it's a lot easier to get...let's say, contemporary sounds out of Spire. It's got all sorts of goodies (vowels in the phaser and more shaper tools ^^), is much smaller since everything is nested. It's got this unique character that's neither analog nor digital, but sits right in the middle. So far, it feels like I'm splitting hairs since they are both genuinely great choices.

Spire and Hive complement each other wonderfully. While Hive is less in-depth than Spire it does have such an immediate workflow (and of course lower CPU) that it's often preferable unless a more complex sound is desired.

I was on the fence until i tried it, the feature set may be modest but it's just such a joy to use.

Thanks Ted. I made a silly mistake - looking for my initials in the preset titles but they are in the author section. :dog: :oops: I backed up my preset folder then installed the new version of Hive and it kept all the old presets and just added new factory preset folders - logical but I wasn't sure it would do that.

I was getting depressed about music and Hive after the old presets weren't very usable for my stuff. I was also hearing a bit of digitality in Hive and everywhere else, which started happening after playing with Serum when it came out. :( But this new release of Hive with all the new patches sounds very warm and analogue and rich. Some great new presets in there, and very usable. Every new preset sounds great! :tu: :hyper:

Still haven't figured out about the sub-oscillators. With Sylenth you can you instantly change the octave so that all four oscillators can be at different octaves. But that is either impossible or not obvious with Hive. I see others on YouTube wondering about this. The octaves were the first thing I fiddled with in Sylenth. Also, is it true that the sub-oscillators are more limited than Sylenth's third and fourth oscillators?

I really hope they add some vocal-type sounds and an XY thingy to Hive.

You can have 4 independent octaves with Hive. The oscillators can be set to 2 octaves above or below their master oscillator. Simply move their semi-tone control up or down.

As for being more limited, it can be the case. In sylenth1 you have 4 fully independent oscs, they can be any wave shape and have any stacking amount. In Hive the 2 sub oscs are slaves. They can have their own wave forms but you can't set their stacking amount independently. You can however set them to simply copy their master osc. So if Osc1 is a 16 stacked square, so will the sub be, but at a different pitch (if you choose).

This has probably been said/requested already, but something like a vowel filter would be a great addition. And, in regards to previous posts, maybe Urs would consider copying the Sylenth paradigm and giving us 2 sets of oscs/filters. I realize Hive is meant to be "simple", but it'll be interesting to see what 1.0 will be like.

I wasn't talking about the slaves, I basically meant giving us two Hives in one, with the added complexity of inter-routing between layers. And maybe some FM while we're at it. And now that I mention it, why not some wavetables? And more filter types? And I'd also appreciate some complex MSEGs, or at the very least freely drawable ADSRs...

Okay, okay, I get it. But a comb and vowel filter would be really welcome!
