Thanks, Andrew ... for making me feel even more insecure about my HP Pavilion :scared:

Post

HP is geat. Their Z-Workstations are quite amazing. Potentially more powerful than the current Mac Pro actually. You could today , right this instant, create a 36-core, 72-thread dual socket Xeon beast (if you had enough $. of course  ). KS would love it. Sound-designers and composers working on major films can/do have this kind of power for instance...

As mentioned KS is just the first step. We are going to do even more crazy things with it.

Us sound-designers have used various off-line tools forever to get great results. If you are working on a low power laptop etc you can think of KS like this for now -- you probably won't be able to run 20 max-setting instances live on a laptop any-time soon.

But if you are running Sound Forge or Wavelab or whatever and are simply making content, there is absolutely no reason why even low power laptop can not handle a single KS instance with Max settings. And there is absolutely no reason why you would NOT want KS to take over the entire computer in this case. This would be EXACTLY what you WOULD want, as when it can do so, as it can, render times will be blazing fast, thus decreasing your wait time and increasing your productivity...

I personally worked exactly this way for over a decade. I was hanging out with my buddy Richard Devine Sunday night post NAMM, and he said exactly the same thing to me without me asking. Basically the best sound-designers will tolerate whatever they have to to get bleeding edge results.

So it's my job right now to explore extreme things slightly before they are reasonable for mainstream computers. The above test is a demonstration of this kind of thing. I don't expect everyone here to have these kind of resources. But I do know for certain that it is completely possible today to already get amazing results with Kaleidoscope as it is today. Lower power computers simply require more bouncing/freezing/rendering. Nothing wrong with that. :tu:

Having said that, we did just majorly optimize the String resonator modes, and are working on even more optimizations right now too. Update very soon on that...

Ran fine on my dual core 2014 MBP with one instance besides strings which apparently you guys have optimized the shit out of!

Looking forward to being able to use Kaleidoscope on the go :tu:

I just managed to figure out how to record KS output (200% white noise) to an audio track as Andrew suggested. This certainly makes it easier to put a structured composition together. I think that was the part I was missing. Before I couldn't see how to control what I was recording - Now I have a connection in my mind between 'oooh pretty sounds' and writing music.

Same test as before but now using the newly optimized String resonators.

8 instances live in Cubase 8.0.5.

Maximum possible settings for String Resonator mode for each instance:

• 512 Active Lines
• Double String Res Mode
• Dual Dynamic Modulation

Multiplied by 8 stereo instances this is:

• 8,192 voices
• 16,777,216 points of automation

Realtime!

So this is now almost as efficient as the Spring resonators (which is amazing as these are more complex computationally and use a LOT more memory resources.)

Meh, I was just teasing. My little Pavilion can handle a single instance of KS with 256 lines without breaking a sweat, but at 512 lines on both stereo channels it tends to, as Jonesy would say, "run home to mamma".

I seem to be obsessed with cloudy themes :ud:

In this track I just use Kaleidoscope as a colorizer for the most part for normal instruments (piano, sitar, flute) as well as a few more synthy parts.

Experimenting with some bass sequencing here, one of my Serum patches tweaked with KS in real time, some waveshaping (Trash 2) post KS, I switch it off towards the end.

Love the part where you get to the broken up tripletish looking notes towards the end, it sounds step sequencerish but you can tell there is something crazy going on too.

Gives me some ideas :)

Something rather dark and a little bit evil - processing a looped and transposed brass swell from one of my orchestral works with KS in dual string mode with a wave tuning file extracted from a wahwah trombone, the texture needs some time to establish in the video, sounds like high flageolet violins towards the end:

that's perfectly awful! In a very great cinematic sort of way. :tu:

I think some horror movie directors will be calling you very soon... 8)

LOL, I will note that phrase - that's perfectly awful! - LOLZ  :D

After watching that video it just dawned on me that the Input and Output are seperate envelopes.

:dog:

I am a slow learner :hihi:

I was wondering where that crazy step sequencer pattern was coming from when I turned on dynamic output mode... the default output envelope
