how do we route tracks together in a single effect rack?

Is it possible to route tracks to single effects racks to save cpu? Say we are working on drums that are arranged separately and we want to send it out to the same compressor?

check out the rack filter guides at www.adbe.org I'm pretty sure they will be able to explain how to do this.

actually for stuff like compressors you probably wont even want to use racks.
Rule of thumb, for 'send' style effects where you need to control some level of wet and dry differently for each track, use racks. For 'insert' style effects where the effect level will be uniform across all tracks, use the track output approach.
As glurgle says, the guides on adbe.org should get you up and going with racks.
To simply do an insert group though, try placing your compressor on (say) track three, your drums on track one and two, and then setting the output for tracks one and two to point to track three.
To set the output, select the track, and there is an option for track output.

but can you use both technique at th esame time? say for reverb ala racks and compression with the insert send style?

Yeah, it's a bit tricky. What happens is that the send effect goes to the insert too - and who wants to be forced to compress their reverb?!?But can you use both technique at th esame time? say for reverb ala racks and compression with the insert send style?
My current alternative solution is:
1. Use ModuLR's excellent Senderella plug in effect load an instance after each track you want to send from and set up a track with an instance of Senderella before the fx (reverb) etc that you want to use.
You can do this for as many effect sends as you want - just set Senderella to different MIDI channels for each effect you want to use, and put each effect on a separate channel.
2. Then set up an insert group as described by Valley earlier in this topic.
Et voila - you have fx sends and inserts as configurable as you like.
I have made a couple of presets in Tracktion for senderella so that I can just call them up as and when I need them.
This also bypasses the lack of Plug In Delay Compensation issue with racks...
However, I agree that the guides at ADBE are excellent, and you may prefer to use that method for creating Send FX. here's the full url for their rack fx guide
http://www.adbe.org/guides/tracktion/racks1.html
Tracktion Faction - http://www.tracktionfaction.com/index.php - have also released their TF mixer, which is pretty nifty. Not sure if it will address this issue - I'll look into it...

NeilG, there are actually a whole slew of different ways to marry racks and track bussing. It depends exactly what you are trying to get though, as each gives a subtley different end result. EG, as simondsouza points out, running your reverb through the compressor is a possibility, and may or may not be exactly what you are looking to do.
Regardless of whether you use racks or senderalla, just give some thought as to where abouts in the signal chain you place the send, and how you deal with the send's output.
-[chorus]-[send]-| is not the same as -[send]-[chorus]-| which in turn is totally different to -[send]-[return]-[chorus]-|

ok ok, if you 're into those 80s 'listen to me I'm a pompous old fart' drum sounds, or if you're into pumping 'air' into tire old breakbeats, then yeah maybe you're gonna compress your reverb, but me, i like my reverb free and untramelled, like a bird soaring in the sky, hitting a clif, squawking and hearing the miltiple reflections coming off the hills all around......
send, return, chorus, return, verse, send, middle 8 etc etc etc

Hey Valley, you forgot the old classic:-[chorus]-[send]-| is not the same as -[send]-[chorus]-| which in turn is totally different to -[send]-[return]-[chorus]-|

can someone point me towards the link for senderella and maybe a little tutorial on how to use it, or at least a few pointers?

Not necessarily.. surely it depends what track your reverb return is on, and where that is routed.simondsouza wrote:Yeah, it's a bit tricky. There's some info about it but it doesn't make it very clear.
Quick tutorial
Put an instance of Senderella on a new track and name the track reverb send or something. Add your favourite reverb after it.
Click on Senderella and enter the following settings:
Dry -inf dB
Wet +0.0dB
Channel 1
Mode Recieve
Amount 100%
Sender Output Redirect and pass thru
You should save this as something like 'put on send track 1'
Set your reverb up as you would a send effect (dry at 0 wet at max).
Now create an instance of Senderella after the instrument that you want to send.
Set these senderella settings to :
Dry +0.0 dB
Wet -inf dB
Channel 1
Mode Send
Amount Around 30% - but this is the control that says how much reverb you want added to the signal, so you will need to adjust it to your liking.
Sender Output Redirect and pass thru.
Save this as a preset with a name like 'Put after instrument 1'
Do the same for each track you want to send to the reverb track. (You can ctrl-drag senderella or drag a new filter and select your newly created preset.
Voila - a reverb (or any other fx or combination of fx) with no latency added
If you want to add more sends then duplicate the process, substituting channel 2 for channel 1, and save those presets with a number 2 instead of a number 1.
You can set up upto 64 sends this way.
Oh by the way, if you want to set up an insert, do the same, but in the senderella after the instrument set both Dry and wet to -inf dB and set Sender output to 'Redirect only'
Set up the insert track as you would the send track, but have your fx settings (eg compression)set up allowing the dry and wet signal to pass through it.
Hope this is clear. Let me know if it isn't.
Cheers
Simon
