Personally I really really like spring mode so it wasn't a huge deal but I definitely will explore string modes more now

String and dual string mode working much better for me, no more popping / clicking with higher settings.

My apologies for saying earlier that I thought you had used Artmatic; I think I inferred it from your Artmatic recommendation earlier in the thread.Galbanum wrote:xx JPRacer xx wrote:Sorry if it was asked before but what program did you use to generate those images?
Almost everything in the Architecture Volume One content library (which is also the source of most of the factory content) was created between 2000 and 2005 -- maybe even some in 1999). Almost all of the images were done with a combination of Photoshop and Metasynth, and almost all of them were done "manually" in some fashion. Artmatic may have been used a little for a few of the "fractal-looking" images. But it was actually NOT used that much, and may not have even existed at that point -- I don't quite remember.
The "New Additions" folder is stuff that I have done more recently during KS development. I have created proprietary methods to make these kind of images. I do them in a similar way to the way I made Galbanum Architecture Waveforms. I do not use any 3rd party tools. I create them all myself.
I am currently developing Architecture Volume Two which will offer even more resources of this nature targeted specifically for Kaleidoscope.
Looking forward to seeing AV2.

No problem. I think it is a very cool app. I like playing with it. In the context of music/sound usage images generated with it are great for experimental textural things... and great for abstract sound-design.lnikj wrote:

getting "musically useful" images is a bit more tricky... that is what I am focusing on now.

I can see that from my own image experiments.Galbanum wrote:No problem. I think it is a very cool app. I like playing with it. In the context of music/sound usage images generated with it are great for experimental textural things... and great for abstract sound-design.lnikj wrote:

On another note - I can't put my finger on this in the manual though I'm sure it is there - what do the fine vertical white lines indicate that pop up sometimes, often when I raise the octaves quite high?

these are lines are are "Inactive" because they are outside the limits of the min and max allowable frequencies.lnikj wrote: On another note - I can't put my finger on this in the manual though I'm sure it is there - what do the fine vertical white lines indicate that pop up sometimes, often when I raise the octaves quite high?
1.000 hz min for Springs
0.125 hz min for Strings and FIR ( = 8 second period = 2 measure delay at 120bpm)
~20,000 hz max for all res modes when using host sample rate of 44.1 or 48k.
32,768 hz max for all res modes when using host sample rate of 88.2k or higher
Inactive lines do NOT consume CPU resources.
The white number on the right of the GUI is the total number of Active lines, and this is a direct measure of CPU usage of a given preset.

re the B2 manual. I will try to post a final version asap. I think the only thing that was not documented was the dynamics functions.
Something like KS is pretty alien to a lot of people, so I thought it was very important to make the manual VERY thorough and detailed. People generally understand what a reverb does, even advanced ones like B2. But, yes, I will try to clean up those final loose ends.

Thanks for getting back. I'm testing in Logic Pro X and Live (32- and 64-bit versions) using the built-in audio hardware. I'll get to some testing in Max at some point, too, but the two DAWs are good for starters. I have a Metric Halo 2882 and an RME Fireface 400 which I'll do some checking with when I get to my studio someday.Galbanum wrote:What is your host? What is your host/hardware buffer size? What is your audio card?jeremydb wrote:The string resonators are much better, but I still get clicks in many presets (for instance, the Auto Strings presets at the top of the Factory Bank) when using all 512 resonators (regardless of the resonator model), despite the fact that I don't appear to be maxing out my CPU. Backing down to 256 solves the problem, but I can't really explain the behavior. I'm on a Retina MBP running 10.10.2, 2.3 GHz Core i7, 16GB RAM, should really be adequate...![]()
Upload a screen shot of the INFO page of the GUI please.
I can run 10 or more max setting, instances for Strings and Springs on my Mac Pro even at a buffer of size of 256. At 2048 I can run 14 instances in Cubase 8 and Logic 10. I would guess you should be able run at least 3 or 4 max setting instances live on your laptop.
I can confirm that when KS has a large buffer size (say, 2048) and my DAW a lower one (512, for instance), I get the clicking. Matching the buffer sizes (either by pulling KS down or increasing in the DAW) does yield significant sonic improvement. I'll need to do some additional testing before I can saw anything definitively.
Screenshot of Info page is too large to attach, but here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/as8xol748ye5r ... e.png?dl=0. All I've changed is the buffer size.
Aha, I didn't realize that the Max Enabled Lines was changing in response to the Max Resonators setting. Thanks for the clarification, that makes sense.Galbanum wrote:Well, if you switch the info Page pref to 256 and then immediately back to 512, the number of active resonators will NOT automatically return to 512. You would have to go to the MAIN page and move the "Max Enabled Lines" slider up to max. (the red slider if you are using the Cyan color scheme.) This preference is basically a limit as to how far the slider can go up. If you change the pref that requires the slider to come down, it will. But it does not go back up automatically. You have to change it, or change presets or whatever. So in this case, you might actually simply be comparing 256 vs 512 active lines. 256 will use less CPU obviously. Roughly half.jeremydb wrote: Actually, I just observed this, while testing in Live (I can test in Logic if necessary). Note that I have low-resolution mode enabled to avoid the Retina problems.

This week I have been obsessed with playing with granular type of things within Kaleidoscope.

Three rendered and layered resonating string textures all made with a similar custom preset in Kaleidoscope (different ranges, densities, filter settings) only using the internal noise generator to excite the resonators. 2 custom images and a waveform made with Metasynth are used to tune/shape the resonators. Some UberMod on a Bus processes all three signals, each track also has a short convolution reverb added on the track itself.
Beware - disconcerting material!

A little harsh, but approaching the atmosphere of Cage's String Quartet in 4 Parts in a couple of places. Anyway, just another experiment.
