Bummer, I can't get Photoshop to work, it always closes with the error message "initialization failed, program error" - I de-installed, then re-installed, same error. Lightroom installed and runs fine though. Couldn't find help in their FAQs, my permissions are repaired, flash player is up to date, what to do now! Anybody has experience with this...?

I don't often make use of Automator in Mac, but put together a really easy one to use to prep images for KS. Simply select any images you want, apparently of any type, press "run" on the Workflow, and it changes the size to 1024x1024 and the type to .png. I also upload a few examples of running it on .tif and .jpg files. Let me know if you encounter any issues with it.

Another source for images: http://app.geokone.net
It generates geometric images based on various mathematical settings. Under pull down menu for Scene set canvas size to 1024x1024, then it is real easy to export .png images. Randomize is a good place to see what it can do.....

Thank's, I already went through all that trouble-shooting link you posted to no avail, but that preference thing could indeed be a temporary fix, will try now.lnikj wrote:Sampleconstruct wrote:Bummer, I can't get Photoshop to work, it always closes with the error message "initialization failed, program error" - I de-installed, then re-installed, same error. don't bother with the stupid subscription when you can get these for pennies on the dollarlnikj wrote:The photographic community went ape when they moved to subscription but I think the subscription model is excellent. I spent a fortune over the years updating every Photoshop and Lightroom release. This is much cheaper way of staying current.Sampleconstruct wrote:Just bought/subscribed to Photoshop/Lightroom, for future KS endeavors there seemed to be no way around those. Yippy yay yey.

pixelmator has some really cool granular and geometric tools for making patterns that would do well in KS

Nope, deleting all prefs I could find didn't help, this is too frustrating right now so I'll try again tomorrow.Sampleconstruct wrote:lnikj wrote:Sampleconstruct wrote:Bummer, I can't get Photoshop to work, it always closes with the error message "initialization failed, program error" - I de-installed, then re-installed, same error. I had Pixelmator version 1 from some macheist bundle, but never used it much as it had no support from the main photographic plugin houses (I'm a big fan of Nik (now Google) and Topaz plugins).jackmazzotti wrote:pixelmator has some really cool granular and geometric tools for making patterns that would do well in KS
I just googled it and, apparently, it still has no channel support?
For KS you want to knock out the blue channel, or convert blue channel information of interest to the red and/or green channels.
I guess there a way round this in Pixelmator but I would have thought more complex than in Photoshop which has about half a dozen one click methods to easily do this?

EDIT:
Yep, I should have been using red and green.
-----
I should be making a 3 channel PNG image with RGB and no alpha channel correct?
Here is the image I made but its not loading in Kaleidoscope fully for some reason:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/qv4kca3nr40gq ... t.png?dl=0
I only see the the bottom 2 parts of the image, not the blue part at the top. Should I be using a red channel instead of a blue channel?
Here is my template:

I don't want to tone down the importance of or disparage that process of making own created images work in the Kaleidoscope framework. I've gone crazy with photo gear long enough that I have massive amounts of images that might be appropriate, and a very high end Raw converter called Capture One pro by Phase One..
I just feel for myself I want to keep music making activity centered on quickly getting into producing mode, using beautiful developed and interesting sounds and learning to use them over larger time frames in coherent built up arrangements. Im developing my harmonic and rhytmic skills as I become familiar with interesting and provocative new timbres, textures and tones that expand the sonic pallet, I don't want to lose sight of real world instrumental practice and tradition by disappearing into technician or sound designer mode.
The possibilities on the resources available are so immense that it's very easy to get lost in the sea of newness and discovery.. which is a nice place too, but not to be premanently flying with the sonic angels, no down on terrafirma is good too.
My interest in Kaleidoscope is more to use it as an effect, and generate new textures from musical program material.. Although some things are going to be loaded into a sample for realtime performance

waves break, but somehow it all makes sense.

If there is such a thing like 'default' preset in KS (a preset with simplifies settings)? How do I reset preset parameters to a default settings to start 'from a scratch'?
Thank you!
Thank you!

lots of empty space in there... or maybe I have thick skull... I once skiied (wrecked) through the metal piping system of the snowblower for the ski slope and broke the pipe in half with my head, and was perfectly fine...
true story. I think I was 16 or 17 then though. I doubt very much I am that invincible now.

Regarding usage, because KS doesn't (yet?) include image editing tools, tuning files editing tools, or waveform editing tools, what would be really great is smoothing the workflow between them.
I don't know if you have ever used Adobe Lightroom but it has lots of clever ways of interacting with external image editing tools and processes. That would be overkill but my point is that having at least an option to switch easily to one or two user specified external editors in each category and back to KS with at least live browser updates would be terrific. Live 'in place' switching would be a dream but very very hard to achieve I'm sure.
I know that's probably a lot of work and a long way down the list though!
[/blue sky mode]
So I see it like we are talking about two topics:
1) continuous editing on a single asset within a third party editor and some kind of link between this and the file in KS. i.e. like Daags requested.
2) importing a bunch of files manually and then needing to refresh the whole resources library.
For 1, maybe we can put a button(s) to do this stuff in the Resource Browser Panels. Maybe two buttons:
a) Open selected in editor (maybe possible)
b) Reload/Update selected (easy)
For 2, maybe we can add this as an action to the Preset Action Panel as described above? This is simple.
For 1, I am not sure if there is some intelligent way to make it happen automatically. Probably the reload/update is needed. (If you are talking about smart updates between adobe products, that is sort of different since adobe makes all these products and therefore can communicate with itself. I am not entirely sure how KS can communicate with editors such as Photoshop, Sound Forge, text-editors etc. Maybe there is a way, but this requires some investigation... and things that require investigation might not happen instantly.)
OK we looked into it a little. We might be able to make some magic happen on these topics...

I was intending to make some stuff like this for tutorial purposes, but I did not get to it yet...
Well, what you can do is turn the "Load Last" pref to "No". Reload.
This is some kind of base preset. From you you can click the Next/Previous Image to get various simple images in the "Tutorial" folder.
